Your Thought Re: Why Do Blacks Remain the Most Religious People in America? (565 hits)

According to a survey recently released by a Christian research firm known as The Barna Group, African Americans are the most religious ethnic/racial group in America. In addition, they appear to have grown even more religious over the past 15 years. The findings are based on a survey which included 1,272 Black participants.
The Barna report concludes, “While the beliefs and behaviors of America’s white population have changed little since the early 1990s, the new research underscored that the faith of African Americans is dynamic, generally moving in a direction that is more aligned with conservative biblical teachings.” Ironically, while Blacks may uphold conservative biblical principles, other studies show them to be the country’s most liberal ethnic or racial voting block.

Is there a contradiction? All comment are welcomed.

Sister Jen, an interesting question.

First, I have to disagree with brother Harry. No race can claim the (dis)honor of being the most irrational. Personally I find black people to have more common sense and white people to be more stupid. As evidenced by the comments I've seen on Dawonne Mathhews death on nola.com. Yes, I can pretty tell much which is which, and some whom I suppose black people had stupid things to say as well.

But back to your question. I can think of a couple explanations, which is not to say I know which is the answer, if any. Maybe because the definition of what is a religious person is vague, and some black people I've known are not what I'd call religious by any means but that,s no different than some white people I've known.

But if we accept some benefit to generalities here's a couple possible answers:

1) It's like Frederick Douglass said when talking about the slaves singing, not from joy, but from sorrow.

2) It's something in black people's nature, call it soul. I call it heart.

3) It's a combination of the above that leads black people to realize that matters of the spirit are timeless and not transitory as this life..

robert "I" must agree with you 1000% since my "I take the fith" is not here(smile)

We all need some faith that there is more to life that this, because "I" have seen faith and beliefsf in an after life as common in each and every religion / religious sect that "I" have studied...
