6 Ways To Prevent Tangles In Kinky Natural Hair (1818 hits)

Natural hair is beautiful, it’s trendy, it’s popular and it’s here to stay. It’s also time-consuming, quirky and requires real knowledge, time and patience to keep your tresses healthy and looking amazing. One of those quirks is tangles, they can drive a woman crazy and I cant help but remember those relaxed hair days when I never had to deal with them. Now don’t get me wrong, going back to a relaxer is never an option but it doesn't mean I do not long for those days when detangling was much easier. Did we mention that tangles are a nightmare? Here is why, our hair in its natural state tends to coil or curl around itself and other hairs and before you know it you will have single-strand knots or tangles that frustrate and make you feel like ripping them out.

Ripping them out is NOT the answer but the sheer maddening quickness with which tangles can appear will bring you to that point of frustration if you don’t know how to eliminate them before they occur. Is it even possible to prevent tangle occurring? Yes, it is and with a few tricks added to your daily or weekly routines you will find less tangles and more hairs staying on your lovely heads. If you have curly, kinky, coily, tangley hair, here are 6 ways you can nip them in the bud:

1. Prepare for the weather We all have immediate access to the weather on our phones, laptops, or even the good old nightly news. Use that information to your advantage, wearing your hair up with ends tucked under if there will be humid or wet weather. Wet weather makes our hair swell and shrink because of the moisture in the air, and shrinkage causes the strands to coil around itself and tangle. When the weather is less humid wearing a loose style is less of a concern and so tangles are not a big issue. The object is NOT to wear your hair as you would like but rather according to what is best for your hair’s health.

2. Trim your ends Blunt ends tangle less, simple enough to understand right? Raggedy ends and split ends are more prone to coiling around themselves so regular trims are necessary. How often you trim your hair is truly up to you and the state of your hair, for instance if you are using no heat, no chemicals (like color) then you obviously need less trims than a natural who is doing both. Check your ends regularly to see if they need a trim, a dusting or a search and destroy session. ...
