The 34th International Marathon went on in Beijing dispite of heavy smog warnings in the race beginnings. The effort of the marathon was to raise awareness and funds to help fight air pollution. Government officials wanted to cancel and postpone the run due to the heavy smog on the day of the race October 18, 2014-- saying the conditions of the air was hazardous. Runners could be seen wearing air masks as the race continued. Heavy smog and air pollution has been a problem in China due to factories and pollutants released in the air and into lakes, and streams. However, the outcome of the marathon had a winner with Girmay Gebru of Ethopia winning the race with 2 hours and 10 minutes. He ran the race without wearing a mask.
