Anthony Johnson The First Black Slave Master (36338 hits)

Anthony Johnson

According to colonial records, the first slave owner in the United States was a black man.

Prior to 1655 there were no legal slaves in the colonies, only indentured servants. All masters were required to free their servants after their time was up. Seven years was the limit that an indentured servant could be held. Upon their release they were granted 50 acres of land. This included any Negro purchased from slave traders. Negros were also granted 50 acres upon their release.

Anthony Johnson was a Negro from modern-day Angola. He was brought to the US to work on a tobacco farm in 1619. In 1622 he was almost killed when Powhatan Indians attacked the farm. 52 out of 57 people on the farm perished in the attack. He married a female black servant while working on the farm.

When Anthony was released he was legally recognized as a “free Negro” and ran a successful farm. In 1651 he held 250 acres and five black indentured servants. In 1654, it was time for Anthony to release John Casor, a black indentured servant. Instead Anthony told Casor he was extending his time. Casor left and became employed by the free white man Robert Parker.

Anthony Johnson sued Robert Parker in the Northampton Court in 1654. In 1655, the court ruled that Anthony Johnson could hold John Casor indefinitely. The court gave judicial sanction for blacks to own slave of their own race. Thus Casor became the first permanent slave and Johnson the first slave owner.

Whites still could not legally hold a black servant as an indefinite slave until 1670. In that year, the colonial assembly passed legislation permitting free whites, blacks, and Indians the right to own blacks as slaves.

By 1699, the number of free blacks prompted fears of a “Negro insurrection.” Virginia Colonial ordered the repatriation of freed blacks back to Africa. Many blacks sold themselves to white masters so they would not have to go to Africa. This was the first effort to gently repatriate free blacks back to Africa. The modern nations of Sierra Leone and Liberia both originated as colonies of repatriated former black slaves.

However, black slave owners continued to thrive in the United States.

By 1830 there were 3,775 black families living in the South who owned black slaves. By 1860 there were about 3,000 slaves owned by black households in the city of New Orleans alone.

Now during this period in times of slavery in this country there was 4 million Black’s and about a quarter million of them was actually FREE.

So, what do you call the children of these FREE BLACK PEOPLE during the time period of slavery in this country?

From Indentured Servitude to Racial Slavery

One of the few recorded histories of an African in America that we can glean from early court records is that of "Antonio the negro," as he was named in the 1625 Virginia census. He was brought to the colony in 1621. At this time, English and Colonial law did not define racial slavery; the census calls him not a slave but a "servant." Later, Antonio changed his name to Anthony Johnson, married an African American servant named Mary, and they had four children. Mary and Anthony also became free, and he soon owned land and cattle and even indentured servants of his own. By 1650, Anthony was still one of only 400 Africans in the colony among nearly 19,000 settlers. In Johnson's own county, at least 20 African men and women were free, and 13 owned their own homes.

Brother Deacon,

I see that Harry wants to talk about Black Heritage, Free Black Americans, but wants to control the venue and bring attention to himself instead. But his "revelation" of 15 generations is now down to 3.

Georgia, the last free colony, legalized slavery in 1750. That meant slavery was now legal in each of the thirteen British colonies that would soon become the United States. But the conflict between those who supported racial enslavement and those who believed in freedom was only just beginning. In the tumultuous generation of the American Revolution, protests against "enslavement" by Britain and demands for American "liberty " would become common in the rebellious colonies, and many African Americans, both slave and free, had high hopes that the rhetoric of Independence would apply to them. These hopes, however, would eventually be dashed, and it would take a bloody civil war three generations later to finally bring an end to the enslavement of black Americans.

Brother Steve,

He and anyone else is more than welcome to join this conversation but as far as him having control of this blog, I just simply say that this is not his research, topic or the proof that the BLACK people was FREE and owning Plantations of more then 10 slaves during the times of Slavery.

My question to him is: What do you call the Children of Free Black people during the times of slavery?

Harry, you are welcome to join in and we can talk.

Mr. Deacon,

To have a dialogue about Black slave owners during plantation slavery is worthless. The dialogue is Black Americans are a new race of people!

Here is the analytical thinking and rational reasoning! Whether it was or wasn’t Black slave owners in the days of plantation slavery is meaningless because it wouldn’t change our present circumstances.

On the other hand, Black Americans scientifically realizing that we are a new race of people will require a significant change in the way we think!

Therefore, I am not engaging in any stupid dialogue that will bear no fruits!

HARRY,

Did you understand the content of this presentation? Because if you did and understood that he was reading from legal documents and court records about the first case of slavery in the colonies, which are now known as The United States. Why would you deny the FACTS in this case? For you are still willing to hide behind a series of LIES that the Black American is a new race of people.

YOUR WWORDS: Here is the analytical thinking and rational reasoning! Whether it was or wasn’t Black slave owners in the days of plantation slavery is meaningless because it wouldn’t change our present circumstances.

YES it would Brother HARRY.

First it would shed the light of knowledge that we are people who was FREE, had families, own property, and was worth more as business owners then white folks who just made $100 a year during the times of slavery.

It would show our Black people, our black children of today that those times was not as hopeless, that we had hero’s as role models like The Black FAMILIES, Fathers, Grand Fathers Mothers and Grandmothers, GOD and the believe that someday freedom will come. Black History is very important for our children, for our people to know, to know that they have roots that GOD brought us out of slavery. That we can be more than some to be thrown away or be shot on sight.

This information is being revealed to us through our Brothers and Sisters searching through legal court document to find out our lost past, our family lines, our blood lines and our family tree to who we are as a people, as one people under God. This will result in a greater significant in that change in the way we as a people think.

HARRY, I know that it will change and bring hope to the readership of Black In America by your added participation.

Mr. Deacon,

This is your claim!

Anthony Johnson, according to colonial records, the first slave owner in the United States was a black man. Am I right or am I wrong?

Anthony Johnson being the first slave owner in the United States and Black Americans being a new race of people are two different items can you see that for yourself?

Can you see that we are talking about two different things? I am saying that Black Americans are a new race of people. You are saying that Mr. Antonio Johnson owned slaves.

According to official colonial court records, documents and tax records.

I have only been talking about one thing people. Have you understood the content of this presentation? If so, then you can answer the question that I have been asking you for about a week now which you are running from and refuse to answer.

YOUR WORDS: Anthony Johnson being the first slave owner in the United States and Black Americans being a new race of people are two different items can you see that for yourself?

If was more FREE BLACK people other than Anthony Johnson who owned slaves, some of which owned from 10 to 100 slaves, these are businesses and children was born in these plantations as well who never was owned by the old white plantation slave owner or his breeding. would you call these slaves a new race of people?

"What do you call the children of the FREE BLACK people during the time slavery?"

Today, if you was the meet the offspring's of former slaves, how could you tell the difference between the white raised plantation descendants and the slaves of the offspring's who never knew the white slave owners systemized breeding process? How can you tell the differences HARRY?

Yes HARRY< we are talking about THE BLACK AMERICAN.

The popular negative connotations of "Uncle Tom" have largely been attributed to the numerous derivative works inspired by Uncle Tom's Cabin in the decade after its release, rather than the original novel itself, whose title character is a more positive figure.[3] These works lampooned and distorted the portrayal of Uncle Tom with politically loaded overtones.[5]

Mr. Deacon,

Mr. Antonio/Anthony Johnson was an African male from Angola, Africa. Therefore, Mr. Johnston was not a descendent of plantation slaves. I am talking about the descendents of plantation slaves. The descendents of plantation slaves are called Black Americans.

The descendents of plantation slaves are the first generation from the breeding process between the old White slave masters and their female African slaves. The descendents of plantation slaves first must come from the womb of the African female slaves! Mr. Antonio was not an African female slave.

Explain that to the White Steve and see what he can advise you to do next.

Johnson was captured in his native Angola by an enemy tribe and sold to Arab slave traders.
*****************************
----------NEVER heard of Arabs in ANGOLA
*********************************
He was eventually sold as an indentured servant to a merchant working for..Virginia Company.
**************************************
----------SOLD as indentured?-----PLEASE
****************************************
He arrived in Virginia in 1621 aboard the James. The Virginia Muster (census) of 1624 lists his name as "Antonio not given," recorded as "a Negro" in the "notes" column.
There is some dispute among historians as to whether this was the Antonio later known as Anthony Johnson, as the census lists several "Antonios." This one is considered the most likely.
*****************************************
----------WHY because it meets the FICTION quality of this Falsehood and lovefest of slaveMaster?
**************************************************
In 1657, Johnson’s white neighbor, Edmund Scarborough, forged a letter in which Johnson acknowledged a debt. Johnson did not contest the case.
Although Johnson was illiterate and could not have written the letter, the court granted Scarborough 100 acres of Johnson’s land to pay off his "debt".
In this early period, free blacks enjoyed "relative equality" with the white community.
*************************************************

HARRY,

I am talking about todays BLACK AMERICANS. Did you understand the AUDIO presentation? do you understand that BLACK people was FREE during the time of slavery? Do you understand that Free BLACK people was plantation owners from 10 to a 100 slaves that had BLACK FAMILIES, that also had children?

You still have not answered the question of:

"What do you call the children of the FREE BLACK people or the children born on the BLACK OWNED plantations during the time of slavery?"

Now that you claim to be The First Genuine Black American's Prophet, of 41 million Black Americans,
Why are you making this distinction?: "The descendents of plantation slaves are the first generation from the breeding process between the old White slave masters and their female African slaves. The descendents of plantation slaves first must come from the womb of the African female slaves!" Why are you making this distinction?

Why HARRY, after knowing that FREE BLACK PEOPLE OWNED SLAVES TOO?

Black plantation owners is something you claim did not happen, now that you heard the FACTS, are you ready to acknowledge that Black owned slave plantations as well, during the times of slavery?

Sunday, November 2nd 2014 at 5:27PM
Dea. Ron Gray Sr.
Robert,

That was not the main topic of this AUDIO presentation and if you heard it to his completion, you would have not come to that conclusion about Anthony Johnson at all.

You will stoop this low to promote, indorse, encourage, sponsor, uphold and support A LIE because you think this information comes from Brother Steve. Does race play that much of an important role in your life, that you will LIE about something as small as listening to an AUDIO presentation about FREE BLACK people owning slaves during the time of slavery? WHY ROBERT? This is the kind of BS and LIES that we are trying stop on our space on the internet.

Again, for the second time I asked you where did you see anywhere in my postings that mentioned this: on this topic DO NOT at an African American Family site TRIVIALIZE the slaverAmericana GENERATIONAL rape, torture and murder of OUR ancestors with this FALSEHOOD>.....

And you have failed to do so but yet you stooped this low again to discredit the messenger of this FACT that FREE BLACK AMERICAN’S owned SLAVES and was Plantation owners, owning from 10 to over 100 slaves during the times of slavery in this country. You call the information I bring you TRIVIALIZE and a FALSEHOOD, when this information can easily be found by TPYNG IN YOUR INTERNET ADDRESS BAR “Did Black People Own Slaves?”

How low will you go to keep this information from getting out ROBERT? To many of the Black American community, this maybe the first time this has been brought to the surface and seen in the light of day as I prove that we as Black people are not a new race of people and also we, the Black people in America is God’s Children, You will say this: AND final masterSlave LoveNOTE ---- "relative equality" in 1657 America

STOP this LYING racistlyIGNORANT steveORadam 'whiteSupremist' NONSENSE blaming Steve for bringing white racism to BLACK IN AMERICA. This is your BS ROBERT and it belongs all to you.

Sunday, November 2nd 2014 at 6:44PM
Dea. Ron Gray Sr.
Mr. Deacon,

I will say it again because you did not understand it the first time. Mr. Antonio/Anthony Johnson was not a descendent of plantation slaves since he was an African. The descendents of plantation slaves are the first generation from the breeding between the old White slave masters and their female African slaves.

Therefore, I don’t want to talk about Mr. Antonio/Anthony Johnson since he was not a descendent of plantation slaves. Mr. Antonio Johnson is not a Black American as you and I are. His wife Mary was a descendent of plantation slaves and therefore the four children they had are Black Americans and descendents of plantation slaves through his wife Mary!

I will repeat again, Mr. Antonio Johnson was not a descendent of plantation slaves. Mr. Antonio Johnson was an African. My divine mission is to prove that Black Americans are a new race of people through the constant breeding up the old White slave masters with their slaves.

I do not want to talk about Mr. Anthony Johnson whether he owned slaves or not since he was an African male and not a descendent of plantation slaves. Mr. Antonio Johnson is not one of us and we are not of Mr. Antonio Johnson’s kinds because Black Americans are not African people.

If we are not going to discuss the descendents of plantation slaves a new race of people it makes no sense for me to be in this dialogue. My second revelation from God was that Black Americans descendents of plantation slaves are a new race of people. God said nothing to me about Africans!

So, if we’re not going to discuss the descendents of plantation slaves this will be my last comment on your blog!

Sunday, November 2nd 2014 at 6:53PM
Harry Watley
HARRY,

I did not ask you to talk about Anthony Johnson which you put all this energy to mask your answer mixed with a LIE The FACTS is he was married to a Negro named Marry 1623, she arrived from England aboard the ship Margaret. She was brought to work on the same plantation as Antonio, where she was the only woman. Antonio and Mary married and lived together for over forty years according to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Mary was not a descendent of plantation slavery and her four children was not descendants of the old white plantation thugs or there children.

By the way Harry, if you got proof that refutes Wikipedia’s findings, I would like to see it, can you do that for me?

Since we are not talking about Anthony Johnson, I would like to refocus our attention back to my questions. I simply ask you did you understand the AUDIO presentation? Do you understand that BLACK people was FREE during the time of slavery? Do you understand that Free BLACK people was plantation owners from 10 to over a 100 slaves and that had BLACK FAMILIES that also had children?

"What do you call the children of the FREE BLACK people or the children born on the BLACK OWNED plantations during the time of slavery?"

Now if you are preparing for your quick exit and run away from these questions this only proves the authenticity, legitimacy, validity , Truthfulness, and the realism of your claims to be The First Genuine Black American's Prophet, of all 41 million Black Americans in the United States.

Your move or by and I will talk to you later.

Sunday, November 2nd 2014 at 7:56PM

Mr. Deacon,

What I see and what I know is that all 41 million of us are Black Americans. There is none among us who has papers that says they are descendents of free Black people during plantation slavery of other Blacks!

Steve deceived you. Steve misled you. He tried to do the same to me six years ago when he met me. He gave me the idea to lead my Black American people into the Nevada desert. Steve believes he is smarter than any Black person on BIA. For the most part he is smarter than 99% of you all. The 1% is me, Prophet Harry.

I am not against you Mr. Deacon. I am against what you believe!

YOUR WORDS: Is there a written transcript......from this 1889 earlyEdison phonograph?

Did Black People Own Slaves?
By: Henry Louis Gates Jr.
Posted: March 4 2013 12:03 AM

Nicolas Augustin Metoyer of Louisiana owned 13 slaves in 1830. He and his 12 family members collectively owned 215 slaves.

Editor's note: For those who are wondering about the retro title of this black history series, please take a moment to learn about historian Joel A. Rogers, author of the 1934 book 100 Amazing Facts About the Negro With Complete Proof, to whom these "amazing facts" are an homage.

(The Root) -- 100 Amazing Facts About the Negro No. 21: Did black people own slaves? If so, why?

One of the most vexing questions in African-American history is whether free African Americans themselves owned slaves. The short answer to this question, as you might suspect, is yes, of course; some free black people in this country bought and sold other black people, and did so at least since 1654, continuing to do so right through the Civil War. For me, the really fascinating questions about black slave-owning are how many black "masters" were involved, how many slaves did they own and why did they own slaves?

The answers to these questions are complex, and historians have been arguing for some time over whether free blacks purchased family members as slaves in order to protect them -- motivated, on the one hand, by benevolence and philanthropy, as historian Carter G. Woodson put it, or whether, on the other hand, they purchased other black people "as an act of exploitation," primarily to exploit their free labor for profit, just as white slave owners did. The evidence shows that, unfortunately, both things are true. The great African-American historian, John Hope Franklin, states this clearly: "The majority of Negro owners of slaves had some personal interest in their property." But, he admits, "There were instances, however, in which free Negroes had a real economic interest in the institution of slavery and held slaves in order to improve their economic status."

In a fascinating essay reviewing this controversy, R. Halliburton shows that free black people have owned slaves "in each of the thirteen original states and later in every state that countenanced slavery," at least since Anthony Johnson and his wife Mary went to court in Virginia in 1654 to obtain the services of their indentured servant, a black man, John Castor, for life.

And for a time, free black people could even "own" the services of white indentured servants in Virginia as well. Free blacks owned slaves in Boston by 1724 and in Connecticut by 1783; by 1790, 48 black people in Maryland owned 143 slaves. One particularly notorious black Maryland farmer named Nat Butler "regularly purchased and sold Negroes for the Southern trade," Halliburton wrote.

Perhaps the most insidious or desperate attempt to defend the right of black people to own slaves was the statement made on the eve of the Civil War by a group of free people of color in New Orleans, offering their services to the Confederacy, in part because they were fearful for their own enslavement: "The free colored population [native] of Louisiana … own slaves, and they are dearly attached to their native land … and they are ready to shed their blood for her defense. They have no sympathy for abolitionism; no love for the North, but they have plenty for Louisiana … They will fight for her in 1861 as they fought [to defend New Orleans from the British] in 1814-1815."

These guys were, to put it bluntly, opportunists par excellence: As Noah Andre Trudeau and James G. Hollandsworth Jr. explain, once the war broke out, some of these same black men formed 14 companies of a militia composed of 440 men and were organized by the governor in May 1861 into "the Native Guards, Louisiana," swearing to fight to defend the Confederacy. Although given no combat role, the Guards -- reaching a peak of 1,000 volunteers -- became the first Civil War unit to appoint black officers.

When New Orleans fell in late April 1862 to the Union, about 10 percent of these men, not missing a beat, now formed the Native Guard/Corps d'Afrique to defend the Union. Joel A. Rogers noted this phenomenon in his 100 Amazing Facts: "The Negro slave-holders, like the white ones, fought to keep their chattels in the Civil War." Rogers also notes that some black men, including those in New Orleans at the outbreak of the War, "fought to perpetuate slavery."

How Many Slaves Did Blacks Own?

So what do the actual numbers of black slave owners and their slaves tell us? In 1830, the year most carefully studied by Carter G. Woodson, about 13.7 percent (319,599) of the black population was free. Of these, 3,776 free Negroes owned 12,907 slaves, out of a total of 2,009,043 slaves owned in the entire United States, so the numbers of slaves owned by black people over all was quite small by comparison with the number owned by white people. In his essay, " 'The Known World' of Free Black Slaveholders," Thomas J. Pressly, using Woodson's statistics, calculated that 54 (or about 1 percent) of these black slave owners in 1830 owned between 20 and 84 slaves; 172 (about 4 percent) owned between 10 to 19 slaves; and 3,550 (about 94 percent) each owned between 1 and 9 slaves. Crucially, 42 percent owned just one slave.

Pressly also shows that the percentage of free black slave owners as the total number of free black heads of families was quite high in several states, namely 43 percent in South Carolina, 40 percent in Louisiana, 26 percent in Mississippi, 25 percent in Alabama and 20 percent in Georgia. So why did these free black people own these slaves?

It is reasonable to assume that the 42 percent of the free black slave owners who owned just one slave probably owned a family member to protect that person, as did many of the other black slave owners who owned only slightly larger numbers of slaves. As Woodson put it in 1924's Free Negro Owners of Slaves in the United States in 1830, "The census records show that the majority of the Negro owners of slaves were such from the point of view of philanthropy. In many instances the husband purchased the wife or vice versa … Slaves of Negroes were in some cases the children of a free father who had purchased his wife. If he did not thereafter emancipate the mother, as so many such husbands failed to do, his own children were born his slaves and were thus reported to the numerators."

Moreover, Woodson explains, "Benevolent Negroes often purchased slaves to make their lot easier by granting them their freedom for a nominal sum, or by permitting them to work it out on liberal terms." In other words, these black slave-owners, the clear majority, cleverly used the system of slavery to protect their loved ones. That's the good news.

But not all did, and that is the bad news. Halliburton concludes, after examining the evidence, that "it would be a serious mistake to automatically assume that free blacks owned their spouse or children only for benevolent purposes." Woodson himself notes that a "small number of slaves, however, does not always signify benevolence on the part of the owner." And John Hope Franklin notes that in North Carolina, "Without doubt, there were those who possessed slaves for the purpose of advancing their [own] well-being … these Negro slaveholders were more interested in making their farms or carpenter-shops 'pay' than they were in treating their slaves humanely." For these black slaveholders, he concludes, "there was some effort to conform to the pattern established by the dominant slaveholding group within the State in the effort to elevate themselves to a position of respect and privilege." In other words, most black slave owners probably owned family members to protect them, but far too many turned to slavery to exploit the labor of other black people for profit.

Who Were These Black Slave Owners?

If we were compiling a "Rogues Gallery of Black History," the following free black slaveholders would be in it:

John Carruthers Stanly -- born a slave in Craven County, N.C., the son of an Igbo mother and her master, John Wright Stanly -- became an extraordinarily successful barber and speculator in real estate in New Bern. As Loren Schweninger points out in Black Property Owners in the South, 1790-1915, by the early 1820s, Stanly owned three plantations and 163 slaves, and even hired three white overseers to manage his property! He fathered six children with a slave woman named Kitty, and he eventually freed them. Stanly lost his estate when a loan for $14,962 he had co-signed with his white half brother, John, came due. After his brother's stroke, the loan was Stanly's sole responsibility, and he was unable to pay it.

William Ellison's fascinating story is told by Michael Johnson and James L. Roark in their book, Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South. At his death on the eve of the Civil War, Ellison was wealthier than nine out of 10 white people in South Carolina. He was born in 1790 as a slave on a plantation in the Fairfield District of the state, far up country from Charleston. In 1816, at the age of 26, he bought his own freedom, and soon bought his wife and their child. In 1822, he opened his own cotton gin, and soon became quite wealthy. By his death in 1860, he owned 900 acres of land and 63 slaves. Not one of his slaves was allowed to purchase his or her own freedom.

Louisiana, as we have seen, was its own bizarre world of color, class, caste and slavery. By 1830, in Louisiana, several black people there owned a large number of slaves, including the following: In Pointe Coupee Parish alone, Sophie Delhonde owned 38 slaves; Lefroix Decuire owned 59 slaves; Antoine Decuire owned 70 slaves; Leandre Severin owned 60 slaves; and Victor Duperon owned 10. In St. John the Baptist Parish, Victoire Deslondes owned 52 slaves; in Plaquemine Brule, Martin Donatto owned 75 slaves; in Bayou Teche, Jean B. Muillion owned 52 slaves; Martin Lenormand in St. Martin Parish owned 44 slaves; Verret Polen in West Baton Rouge Parish owned 69 slaves; Francis Jerod in Wa****a Parish owned 33 slaves; and Cecee McCarty in the Upper Suburbs of New Orleans owned 32 slaves. Incredibly, the 13 members of the Metoyer family in Natchitoches Parish -- including Nicolas Augustin Metoyer, pictured -- collectively owned 215 slaves.

Antoine Dubuclet and his wife Claire Pollard owned more than 70 slaves in Iberville Parish when they married. According to Thomas Clarkin, by 1864, in the midst of the Civil War, they owned 100 slaves, worth $94,700. During Reconstruction, he became the state's first black treasurer, serving between 1868 and 1878.

Andrew Durnford was a sugar planter and a physician who owned the St. Rosalie plantation, 33 miles south of New Orleans. In the late 1820s, David O. Whitten tells us, he paid $7,000 for seven male slaves, five females and two children. He traveled all the way to Virginia in the 1830s and purchased 24 more. Eventually, he would own 77 slaves. When a fellow Creole slave owner liberated 85 of his slaves and shipped them off to Liberia, Durnford commented that he couldn't do that, because "self interest is too strongly rooted in the bosom of all that breathes the American atmosphere."

It would be a mistake to think that large black slaveholders were only men. In 1830, in Louisiana, the aforementioned Madame Antoine Dublucet owned 44 slaves, and Madame Ciprien Ricard owned 35 slaves, Louise Divivier owned 17 slaves, Genevieve Rigobert owned 16 slaves and Rose Lanoix and Caroline Miller both owned 13 slaves, while over in Georgia, Betsey Perry owned 25 slaves. According to Johnson and Roark, the wealthiest black person in Charleston, S.C., in 1860 was Maria Weston, who owned 14 slaves and property valued at more than $40,000, at a time when the average white man earned about $100 a year. (The city's largest black slaveholders, though, were Justus Angel and Mistress L. Horry, both of whom owned 84 slaves.)

In Savannah, Ga., between 1823 and 1828, according to Betty Wood's Gender, Race, and Rank in a Revolutionary Age, Hannah Leion owned nine slaves, while the largest slaveholder in 1860 was Ciprien Ricard, who had a sugarcane plantation in Louisiana and owned 152 slaves with her son, Pierre -- many more that the 35 she owned in 1830. According to economic historian Stanley Engerman, "In Charleston, South Carolina about 42 percent of free blacks owned slaves in 1850, and about 64 percent of these slaveholders were women." Greed, in other words, was gender-blind.

Why They Owned Slaves

These men and women, from William Stanly to Madame Ciprien Ricard, were among the largest free Negro slaveholders, and their motivations were neither benevolent nor philanthropic. One would be hard-pressed to account for their ownership of such large numbers of slaves except as avaricious, rapacious, acquisitive and predatory.

But lest we romanticize all of those small black slave owners who ostensibly purchased family members only for humanitarian reasons, even in these cases the evidence can be problematic. Halliburton, citing examples from an essay in the North American Review by Calvin Wilson in 1905, presents some hair-raising challenges to the idea that black people who owned their own family members always treated them well:

Carter Woodson, too, tells us that some of the husbands who purchased their spouses "were not anxious to liberate their wives immediately. They considered it advisable to put them on probation for a few years, and if they did not find them satisfactory they would sell their wives as other slave holders disposed of Negroes." He then relates the example of a black man, a shoemaker in Charleston, S.C., who purchased his wife for $700. But "on finding her hard to please, he sold her a few months thereafter for $750, gaining $50 by the transaction."

Most of us will find the news that some black people bought and sold other black people for profit quite distressing, as well we should. But given the long history of class divisions in the black community, which Martin R. Delany as early as the 1850s described as "a nation within a nation," and given the role of African elites in the long history of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, perhaps we should not be surprised that we can find examples throughout black history of just about every sort of human behavior, from the most noble to the most heinous, that we find in any other people's history.

The good news, scholars agree, is that by 1860 the number of free blacks owning slaves had markedly decreased from 1830. In fact, Loren Schweninger concludes that by the eve of the Civil War, "the phenomenon of free blacks owning slaves had nearly disappeared" in the Upper South, even if it had not in places such as Louisiana in the Lower South. Nevertheless, it is a very sad aspect of African-American history that slavery sometimes could be a colorblind affair, and that the evil business of owning another human being could manifest itself in both males and females, and in black as well as white.

Brother Deacon,

This information from Gates is instructive, and not just the information itself, but his value judgements. He says it is distressing, gives us the good news and the bad news, but history can't be changed, only the present. Slavery took away history, and any and all efforts to recover it is the good news. Thank you.

Mr. Deacon,

Our dialogue is not about an audio presentation. This dialog is about Black Americans descendents of plantation slaves are a new race of people. In rebuttal you presented Mr. Antonio/Anthony Johnson as a free Black man and we come to find out that this African man was not a descendent of plantation slaves and therefore Mr. Johnson is irrelevant.

You go on to talk about books and authors. No author or historian can be right over me because if they were right it wouldn’t be necessary for me Prophet Harry to be present. None of these authors has ever said that prophets are racially different because they had no idea since their mentality and education is below mines. None of these authors ever highlighted the breeding process.

Likewise, in the days of Moses many of the Israelite Elders were authors but none of them were right over Moses!

Now, if we are not going to discuss Black Americans who are descendents of plantation slaves a new race of people then I don’t belong in this fruitless discussion that at the end of the day will bear no fruits.

Is it true that the slave mothers brought their daughters to the Big House and the old White slave masters would be the first to screw and impregnate the young slave girls? These kinds of incidents of a glimpse of the breeding that supports my claim of the breeding process!

Again, if we are not going to talk about the breeding process that supports my claim that Black Americans are a new race of people then I don’t want to participate. I am giving you fair warning because you keep saying that I run from your questions. Your questions are questions that do not deal with the issue of Black Americans being a new race of people. Mr. Antonio/Anthony Johnson has nothing to do with Black Americans being a new race of people and therefore I don’t want to talk about Mr. Anthony Johnson. I want you to present to me forensic evidence that the breeding process never happened and if you can do that than I am wrong, but so far you are not doing that you are changing the subject from the breeding process to free Black people that own slaves during plantation slavery. You can see we are not on the same page.

I want to discuss the truth of whether I am right that Black Americans are a new race of people!

Do the math Harry. If there were 250,000 free blacks out of a population of 4 million in 1830, then in 2014 out of a population of 42 million there would be about 2.5 million descended from those free black people.

Robert,

You are the one who asked the question, YOUR WORDS: Is there a written transcript......from this 1889 earlyEdison phonograph?

LIE Number 1. This transcript report was posted March 4, 2013 12:03 AM, not from a 1889 phonograph. What did you get that LIE FROM?

YOUR WORDS: 1. this olde UNKNOWN to 2014 AUDIO tape surfaces from henryGates--same negro that was disrespected in his multiMillion dollar home by an ignorant policeman?

YES, This is Henry Louis Gates Jr’s transcript that is now in front of you, which you have not commented on yet!

LIE Number 2. Which one is it a UNKNOWN 2014 Audio or a 1889 phonograph. You cannot have it both ways, either you are lying now or you LIED then, which one is it?

YOUR WORDS: 2. you, a selfProfessed 'blackDeaconHebrewIsraelite' BELIEVES racialisticRACISM-NOT I

LIE Number 3. STOP LYING on me ROBERT, you don’t know me. I am on the battle field against ignorance, witlessness, being obliviousness to FACT in Black History and a lack of knowledge on the subject. This is just one reason why I found the transcripts for your review, since it was you who said that you operate from documented history, and truth and not from opinion and emotions. I only hope that I quoted you right.

YOUR WORDS: 3. lying selfProfessed 'whiteMan' steveORadam OR justPotHead IS the BIA Stereotype of a writer that agrees WITH anything from the European Falsehood and Misconceptions of slaverAmericana 1492-1864(1964) that TRIVIALIZES the GENERATIONAL rape, torture, and murder of the African Asian

LIE Number 4. You are trying your best to connect Brother Steve to my findings and using this to discredit the FACTS posted in this posting. If you think that you are not LYING Robert, show me anywhere in that presentation where Brother Steve is mentioned, Can you show that to me?

YOUR WORDS: . I, Robert Powell, for the 2,611,289,375th TIME

On this point I can agree whole heartily. Because God, the maker of the universe and everything in it was made by him, and when he stopped and looked around to see what he made, he said that it was good. Robert, God also made man which he loves as well, every man which means we as his children must do no less. We have the power to forgive and if Brother Steve smoked POT, what business of that, is your business? You are a representative of the light of GOD, no matter what you call him, and as that representative the spirit of the most high is with you always. By having that responsibility you must let the most high, light to shine through you and not this light of hatred, loathing, disgust and animosity you have for Brother Steve. This is not why you was permitted to live so long ROBERT, not for this, NO, NO, not for this because this hatred blinds you to the purpose and the power of GOD.

HARRY,

Why do you keep your head up your ass all the time? This blogs topic as always been talking about Black people owning slaves during the time of slavery and not your attempts to hi-jack this blog, Sorry HARRY, consider your attempts a failure in your efforts.

I have brought you FACTS and plenty material that Black people was also plantation owners of up to and over a hundred slaves which knew not of this so-called white systematic breeding process which you CANNOT REFUTE, DISPROVE, CONTEST, REBUT, REPUDIATE, NECATE or CONTRADICT.

This my Brother is the facts of history which you have said on countless of times DID NOT HAPPEN.

Now I would be a fool to say that Whites did not own Black Slaves and did not undergo the cruelties, brutalities, ,malice, and vindictiveness from these thugs, racists, murderers, killer butchers, slavers brutes, hoodlums, and Christian hypocrite’s you call THE OLD WHITE PLANTATION OWNERS. This is the LIE that you promote HARRY, that man in many cases of far from a little old quiet, cute, innocent old white man that happens to own slaves, this is the image of something you want to protect, at what cost , HARRY?

Yes, there are many of our Brothers and Sisters was apart of this brutal, ruthless, cruel, pitiless, heartless and inhuman process.

This blog I posted was to challenge your second revelation that Black Americans are not a new race of people and that free BLACK people owned slaves and had huge PLANTATIONS that never knew that white man’s systemic breeding process. This maybe the very first time that you have heard this history but it is well documented. HARRY you have refused to answer questions of what do you called the children of the slave families or of the BLACK SLAVE OWNER?

Because if you did, answer that question, you know that there would be a series of follow up question that is something you are trying like hell to avoid.

Don’t run from the truth HARRY, unless you are feeling inadequate .

Exclusive: Ben Kinchlow reveals true history of legal human bondage

Ben Kinchlow is a minister, broadcaster, author and businessman. He was the long-time co-host of CBN's "The 700 Club" television program and host of the international edition of the show, seen in more than 80 countries. He is the founder of Americans for Israel and the African American Political Awareness Coalition, and the author of several books.

February has been officially designated, recognized by many and even celebrated by some as Black History Month or National African-American History Month. While it is acknowledged in some other countries (most notably Canada and the U.K.), it is primarily devoted to the achievements of African-Americans in the U.S. It will, henceforth, include the historical fact that Barack Hussein Obama became the first African-American president of the United States.

However, early American history also reveals another dramatic first involving a black American.

In truth, it should be considered a joint celebration. We are, in actuality, acknowledging the achievements of both blacks and America. Since we are celebrating the achievements of both, it may be appropriate to begin at the beginning.

Black History remembrance began as Negro History Week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a son of former slaves. The second week of February was chosen in honor of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln (both born in that week), and in 1976 the entire month was declared Black History Month.

Now to the beginning. It is well known that the first colonials arrived on these shores following the settlement of Jamestown by the Virginia Company in 1607. Perhaps what is not so well known is the fact that following the Thirty Years’ War, the European economy was extremely depressed. Consequently, many skilled and unskilled laborers there were without work, and the New World offered hope and a chance for a new future.

According to some reports, one-half to two-thirds of the immigrants who came to the American colonies arrived as indentured servants, and this included some Africans, who arrived in Jamestown in 1619. This distinction is critical; indentured servants were not slaves.

The first blacks to arrive in America were not slaves but indentured servants.

In 1619, all indentured servants (white or black)had specified periods of servitude ranging from four to seven yearsand received precisely the same treatment and rewards. At the conclusion of their respective periods of servitude, each was entitled to freedom, citizenship and a land grant of 25 to 50 acres. Throughout the early colonial period when all land was held in trust for the king, the basis of land disposition were grants, dispensed by the local government in accordance with the king’s wishes.

Land grants in Virginia were issued in accordance with a particular system. Under this system, every person who paid his own way to Virginia would be entitled to 50 acres of land, known as a “headright.” There was no stigma attached, and all families, black or white, subsequently enjoyed all the rights and privileges of other citizens in the community. A father could indenture a family of four, and since each family member was entitled to 50 acres at the conclusion of the period of servitude, they were given their freedom and the family would qualify for a parcel of 200 acres.

Using this method, one colonist, Anthony Johnson, by indenturing his own family members, was able to secure 250 acres of land. His sons, utilizing the same strategy, gained an additional 650 acres. The Johnsons settled on “Pungoteague Creek” on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and thrived for almost 40 years.

For the indentureds, there were both economic and civic benefits associated with this practice: British law protected the rights of the individual, the master’s power over his indentured servants was limited, and a specific skill must have been taught.

The Virginia Company, however, changed the rules. They would now allow anyone to pay a person’s transportation to the colony in exchange for a period of indentured servitude, subject to certain caveats. Under the new rules, knowledge of a skill of any kind was not included in this contract and whoever paid the cost of passage would receive the 50 acres of land for each passage purchased. Indentured servants would now get nothing but a trip and often found themselves without rights or freedom. As one white indentured servant, Thomas Best, wrote from Virginia in 1623, “My master Atkins hath sold me for 150 pounds sterling like a damned slave.”

Indentured servants, especially whites, could (and often did) slip away, become part of another settlement and simply disappear. A permanent, economically beneficial solution for the elites was sought and implemented.

Note: The Bible points out a common failing and path to social injustice: “The love of money is the root of all evil.” Nothing against money per se, but the love of same precipitates activities that generate misery; not a high endorsement for a concept it is supposed to propagate and undergird. (As an aside, the overwhelming majority thinks the Bible is a religious book designed to promote religion. In actuality, there are seven references to religious/religion in the Bible, and six of them are negative.)

Here, history takes a bizarre turn. When I came upon this one particularly astonishing bit of information, I was flabbergasted.

Part of the problem with facts is they can cause discomfort when they do not conform to our preconceived notions. Not once had I ever heard so much as a whisper of this, and it flew in the face of everything I knew – everybody knew – about the origins of slavery in the English colonies. Talk about political incorrectness!

Remember the aforementioned Anthony Johnson? He raised livestock, prospered and as was customary with prosperous landowners, indenturing one black and several white servants. Johnson had sued in court and won several cases, but one case in particular would set the stage for a dramatic shift in the workforce. There are several reports as to the origin of this landmark case, which would indelibly change the American cultural landscape and impact relationships between blacks and whites for centuries.

One report says John Casor, a black indentured servant, “swindled” Johnson out of the remainder of his servitude. Another says the family convinced Johnson to free Casor. Still another says Casor “convinced” a white neighbor, Robert Parker, that he was being illegally detained. Whatever the reason, Johnson was not satisfied with the status quo and took Casor and Parker to court, alleging that Casor had not been obtained as a servant, but as a slave.

Understand the true significance of this case. Johnson was not suing to have John Casor fulfill some measure of a debt of servitude. Instead, he insisted the court grant his petition that “he had ye Negro for his life.” He was claiming the services of John Casor for the remainder of Casor’s natural life. To my knowledge, there is no earlier record of judicial support given to slavery in Virginia except as a punishment for crime. Anthony Johnson was asking the court to award him John Casor (who had committed no crime) as a slave.

Parker and one other influential landowner, both white, sided with Casor. However, the court ruled for Johnson. In the original language taken from the original documents is the decision of the county court:

“Court of Northampton; Eight Mar, Anno1654:
Whereas complaint was this daye made to ye court by ye humble peticion of Anth. Johnson Negro ag[ains]t Mr. Robert Parker…”

I needed to read it slowly and in modern English:

“Whereas complaint was this day made to the court by the humble petition of Anthony Johnson, Negro, against Mr. Robert Parker that he detains one John Casor, a Negro, the plaintiff’s servant under pretense that the said John Casor is a freeman. The court seriously considering and maturely weighing the premises do find that the said Mr. Robert Parker most unrightly keeps the said Negro John Casor from his rightful master Anthony Johnson, as it appears by the Deposition of Capt. Samuel Goldsmith and many probable circumstances. Be it therefore the Judgment of the court and ordered that said John Casor, Negro, shall forthwith be turned into the service of his said master, Anthony Johnson, and that the said Mr. Robert Parker make payment of all charges in the suit and execution. (Eighth March, Year 1654)”

This is apparently the first legal sanction of slavery (not for a crime) in the New World.

Johnson – who had himself been captured in Angola and brought to America as an indentured servant – was a black man.

From evidence found in the earliest legal documents, Anthony Johnson must be recognized as the nation’s first official legal slaveholder.

The father of legalized slavery in America was a black man.

Do we celebrate that as part of Black History Month?

You said, In 1565 the slaves were Spanish citizens. That doesn't make sense..

The website I posted said, The First British Slave Ship To Reach The Americas Was Called The Good Jesus!Sir John Hawkins had the dubious distinction of becoming the FIRST slave-ship captain to bring Africans to the Americas. Hawkins was a religious gentleman who insisted that his crew “serve God daily” and “love another”. His ship, ironically called “the good ship Jesus,” left the shores of his native England for Africa in October 1562. He arrived at Sierra Leone, and in a short time he had three hundred blacks in his possession. Hawkins claimed to have acquired them “partly by sword and partly by other means.”

SHOW US WHAT YOU HAVE DONE because if you math is like when you felt you had to prove something to GOD, then your math was all wrong on all three accounts, the 15 Generation and your first revision of 20 years per generation LIE and that famous 18 years per generations BS blew up in your face and was wrong as hell. So, what math are you talking about?

I asked to identify who are the descendents of this so-called free Black slave and plantation owners are and I still haven’t gotten an answer.

MY REPLY: HARRY YOU GOT TO BE BLIND AS HELL! I took my time to find for you a written transcript of many Black Slave owners some of with lived in North Carolina with 10 to over a 100 Black slaves to their PLANTATIONS that I posted just Sunday, November 2nd 2014 at 10:21PM and today is Monday November 3, 2014, just one day has past and you are still believe or you fail to believe that what you saw is not from official records and if this is true, then refute it and bring forth your proof, can you do that HARRY?

HARRY, I have asked you a question every day for a week and you have not answered my direct questions YET! My proof is in front of you for your review.

I asked you the question of, what do you call the children of the free black slave owners or the children of the slaves of the BLACK OWNED PLANTATION SLAVE for a reason.

As we fast forward to the present day to the 41 million Black Americans, that you say that you are the prophet of all of us, I have this question, “How do you tell the difference between who’s descendants was raised on a BLACK OWNED PLANTATION or THE WHITE OWNED PLANTATION? Which all 41 million BLACK AMERICANs are from or the only way that you can be a Black AMERICAN that you must have undergone the white plantation breeding process, is that right HARRY?”

Then you say this: You have made it clear to me that you are not talking about Black Americans. I have no business in this dialogue so this is my last comment!

How did you come to that conclusion that I am not talking about Black American's SIR?

However, it was foretold that you would run again from those simple questions because you are desperate to hold on to this narrow minded view which you have that all black American's are a new race of people.

You have no proof now and you had no proof in 11 months that I have known you, because if you did, you would stand on the documents or official papers, authorized studies, endorsements of historians, sanctioned or authoritative sources but in your case you bring nothing and when asked, “WHERE IS THE PROOF HARRY” you run like hell away from that.

HARRY, you have a pattern of running away from me, when I ask you the most simplest questions of this so-called new race of people.

I know for a FACT, that you run to someone's blog, you try in disrupt that flow of conversation to add your line of BS because no one will talk to you on your blogs you start.

HARRY, you must be a lonely ancient old man but you don't have to stay that way. The Lord has saved you for a reason. You can drop those LIES, ask God to forgive you and be reconnected to the GOD force, where you give respect and also you will receive the same. Where you can feel the love of GOD and you can give that love of God to another. Where you can receive the wisdom of God to hold a conversation to the mission that God has sent you to do and not run away when others poke wholes through that BS you promote.

Do you think that if this mission that you are on is of God, that you would feel abandon, that you cannot hold a decent conversation without getting all emotional, name calling and BS-ing

HARRY, stop your running now and look around you and see the colors, breathe the fresh air of LIFE because God LOVE all he created and that means you to HARRY. Come back to GOD HARRY.

STOP RUNNING AWAY

ank you Helen for breaking up this NONSENSE and LOVEFEST of the deacon steveORadam masterSlave

of course it makes NO SENSE......

and the same place deacon you got this American History Cartoon in my comment above STATES that

-----------Illiterate?---how did he know he owned anything---and so IGNORANT to sign into debt(slave)?

Abstract

Anthony Johnson was a successful black planter in a seemingly inhospitable environment. He was able to work through his original indenture, marry a freed black woman, of which there were few in the area during the 1620s, and eventually move to the Eastern Shore peninsula of Virginia and establish himself independently. Through the pages of the surviving colonial records, researchers are able to trace Anthony Johnson and his family's legal and financial actions. The Johnsons are known to have lived during the seventeenth century because they were involved in various court proceedings and land transactions. They are arguably the most studied flee black family during the 17th century only because there is much written about them through court proceedings and land transactions, yet they are certainly not the only free black family in the region.

What is of interest about this family is that not only was Anthony Johnson involved in legal proceedings, but also his sons, daughters, and grandsons as well. This trend of legal equality can only be traced accurately until the early 1700s. By that time slavery in the region had already been established, and fewer chances for, freedom were available to blacks. It is amazing to see the success the Johnsons had while simultaneously surviving in an environment of slavery and hardship for a number of generations.

Robert,

This transcript request was a surprise to you. You did not think there was one, didn't you? Now that you see it was one and this transcript was brought to you so, rapidly, all you have tried to do was discredit these findings of history.

What difference does it make that Mr. Johnson was illiterate or not the FACTS still stand that the courts found that Mr. Johnson could own slaves, which made him the first to so and from that decision got the ball started for slavery in this country, did it not?

Now Robert, if you have any information that refute that FACT, I would love to see that but if you don't, you need to shut up and sit down.

Let us deal with the FACTS live life with the EVIDENCE. Are you ready to real with the transcript you requested showing the power through wealth the free black people had during slavery or not?

See this topic was over your boys head about this new race of people BS, so he got the flock out of here and left you holding the bag. Now since you came to his rescue, are you willing to continue his cause?

My evidence that free Black people also owned slaves and the children of the free black slave owner and the children of the black slaves who never knew the old white plantation owners systemically breeding process, what do you call those children? Fast forward today, are we all Black Americans according to your boys, point of view. With my evidence before you are you willing to argue the same point he ran like hell from? Well are you?

John Winthrop is the real first legal slave own. Serving as the Governor of Massachusetts, he's the actual person who legalized slavery in 1641. I looked it up in from Britannica Encyclopedia, it stated slavery was legalized in 1641.

HARRY never did bring himself back to explain those LIES did he?

.How Many Slaves Did Blacks Own?

Deacon Ray Gray I posted your article about Anthony Johnson And got this rebuttal. also the previous Post from the same Clip Brownsome. How would you respond to this guy?
Clip Brownsome How can you teach me anything when you know far less than me?
FOR EXAMPLE. THE PICTURE OF JOHNSON FROM YOUR BLOG IS A DOCTORED PICTURE OF LEWIS HAYDEN NOT ANTHONY JOHNSON!
Your post serves as a excellent example when you post and don't fact check before posting.
For God's sake the man is wearing a outfit from the Victorian Era. It's a huge clue the picture is doctored. That's how I knew.
Below is a meme and photograph of the man you claim is Johnson
According to the University of Texas, the first photograph was created in 1827. Johnson was born in 1600.
You can only conclude 3 things about that photograph.
1. Johnson has time machine and travel to the 1800's to pose for that photograph.
2. Johnson lived for over 227 yrs
OR
3. That's NOT Johnson and you're using a doctored picture of Lewis Hayden and you're passing it off as Johnson.
Delete or hide this

First off, welcome to Black In America Gerald and thank you for these points you brought to this post.

YOU: According to your blog, the US was a country in 1655.
FACT: According to the Library of Congress, the US became a country on July 4th, 1776.

Gerald, can you point out in this blog where I said: , the US was a country in 1655?

Now in this post, I made two references to the year 1655.

1. Prior to 1655 there were no legal slaves in the colonies, only indentured servants.
2. In 1655, the court ruled that Anthony Johnson could hold John Casor indefinitely. The court gave judicial sanction for blacks to own slave of their own race. Thus Casor became the first permanent slave and Johnson the first slave owner.

YOU: According to you, Johnson is the 1st legal slave owner.
FACT: According to the Library of Virginia
John Punch becomes the 1st DOCUMENTED legal slave and Hugh Gwyn becomes the 1st DOCUMENTED slave owner.

MY REPLY: Johnson was the 1st legal slave owner.
Now Gerald, I ‘am sure that you can understand that there is a difference in being the 1st legal slave owner, then being a SLAVE, now don’t you?

I ‘am going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you know the difference.

YOUR WORDS: FACT: According to Encyclopedia Britannica, in 1641 MA Gov. John Winthrop is the person who legalized slavery
READ THE TIMELINE, IT DEBUNKS EVERYTHING YOU POSTED

MYREPLY: Thank you for this information which this report did not cover.

Now Gerald, what did you DEBUNK?

Why are you calling the image of Anthony Johnson a photograph in the first place Gerald, I never made that claim. Now if you really think I did, point it out in this blog, can you do that?

HARRY, both yahshua and Muhammad came from the same bloodline. Abraham had a child and his name was Ishmael which is believed to be the progenitor of the Arads and considered a messenger and a prophet according to the the Quran.

So you are WRONG as hell HARRY, all the prophets is from one race of people "Negro.".

Now HARRY, have you ever been called a NEGRO?

Friday, August 7th 2020 at 2:13PM
Dea. Ron Gray Sr.
I am going to ask you again and if you do not address my question this will be my last comment.

Wasn’t Prophet Jesus racially different from Prophet Mohammed and both were anointed by the same one God?

The answer is either YES of NO!

You said things about Ishmael and the Jewish Prophet Abraham, but the focus is on Prophet Mohammed and not Ishmael since Mohammed was the anointed prophet and not Ishmael. Prophet Mohammed was an Arab man 100% and not Ishmael. Ishmael was not 50% Arab and therefore Ishmael could not be anointed the prophet of the Arabian people.
