Despite the best efforts of the crew, including a stewardess who used to be a nurse, the captain died while flying the bulky jet.
There is audio of a conversation between the plane’s co-pilot and members of air traffic control.
The conversation is harrowing:
“Medical Emergency, pilot is incapacitated. Request handling for runway 108.”
The co-pilot managed to land the plane, taking over for the recently deceased captain and saving the lives of all 147 passengers.
One passenger of the flight took to Twitter to express her emotions on the matter.
American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein spoke to USA Today about the incident:
“We are incredibly saddened by this event, and we are focused on caring for our pilot’s family and colleagues,” he said.
This story is still developing and the cause of the captain’s death is unknown. He was 57 years old.
