As part of the One Million Backpack campaign, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Omicron Tau Omega chapter, hosted a Back to School Drive at Prospect Park on August 11, 2016. In conjunction with Hodges Communications Group, Good Clean Fun and the Ethel Hedgeman Lyle Foundation of Texas, the chapter collected backpacks and accepted monetary donations to support their one million backpack initiative. All attendees were asked to donate backpacks filled with pencils, paper, markers, highlighters and other vital school supplies.
As a result of these donations, the chapter distributed over 250 backpacks filled with schools supplies to Ridge Creek Elementary School in Humble, Texas. The chapter gathered on Thursday, August 18th to personally deliver the backpacks to students. The One Million Backpack program is a global service project designed to provide the necessary learning tools for educational success. The goal of this program is to collect and distribute one million backpacks and school supplies to students over a four year period.
