KIPP Lead Academy going strong with HBCU-led teachers (5823 hits)

KIPP DC Lead Academy is a non-profit, independently owned, tuition-free charter public school that is open to all students, including those with disabilities. It runs with more flexibility than traditional public schools in exchange for increased accountability with performance goals, methods of assessment, and the school's mission in mind.

In the midst of this educational institution is a team of HBCU-bred educators that not only beams with HBCU pride but also becomes a positive influence in their students lives on a daily basis. Meisha Mcleod is an elementary teacher at KIPP DC Lead Academy located in Washington DC. She also happens to be a proud alumnus of Florida A&M University. She enjoys sharing information when it comes to learning about the HBCUs. Several HBCU graduates such as Martin Luther King Jr, Althea Gibson, Booker T. Washington, and Alice Walker all attended schools that represent the HBCU label and thus received the foundations to change the world.

Meisha is not the only one to inject a bit of HBCU flavor into their students. Currently there are ten other HBCU graduates who work hard to inspire at KIPP DC Lead Academy. They currently comprise of alum from the schools of Florida A&M University, Howard University, Hampton University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Bethune Cookman University, Virginia State University, Winston-Salem State University, and Coppin State University. Each day, they wake up ready to recruit and promote young kings and queens to hopefully one day further their education at one of the illustrious Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

There are 209 KIPP schools in the nation and each college-preparatory, public charter school focuses on the education of early childhood, elementary, middle, and high school students.

Thanks to the dedication of educators like Meisha and the other 10 HBCU alums, we can be assured that our future grows brighter by the day. They are truly the positive forces that help shape the future of today's children.
