On the day of Mayor khalid's Kamau swearing in he made remarks on the steps of the City of South Fulton (COSF) - City Hall.
The days following would lead to the current installed "City Council" minus one member to hold a "Special Meeting" to censure the incoming Mayor prior to him officially assuming the role of mayor.
Let's talk about the newly charted twin city of Atlanta - becoming the 8th largest city in the state of Georgia in 2017. The COSF is noted as the "Blackest City" in America, and as many of us know in the Black Community, there are messy individuals and situations.
The council members disapproved of the remarks regarding replacing the city manger, city clerk, and city attorney respectfully. According to recent press releases and interview by current City Councilwoman Helen Z. Willis D3, "the COSF is a city council - city manager form of government. The city council are policy makers and the city many manager implement those policies. The mayor is responsible for presiding over meetings, and as the spokesperson for the city - the mayor should represent a collective voice & unified vision - meaning the position is a ceremonial role - a weak mayor system to be exact."
Many residents suggest there are messy individuals within the city and council members who campaigned for, and who are still bitter because the previous Mayor William "Bill" Edwards, was voted out by the residents. Are is it because Mayor khalid is the "1st Openly-Gay Mayor" to serve the residents of COSF, and there is nothing the council can do about it - except criticize every word, and everything that comes out of the mayors mouth when speaking on changes and, or ideas he desire to witness under his weak leadership. After all the mayor cannot hire or fire without the entire body being in agreement.
The COSF will require a change within the council members not all but some, in order to elevate the city to the next level - the old regime is OUT - the old way of city business is OUT therefore, the COSF will not advance until some residents and some council members are OUT.
The role of an "elected official" a government employee is to protect and serve the residents that voted them into office, ones personal connections, and emotions are counter productive to becoming a vital city in this region. Many of the COSF leaders should consider taking a course in 'Public Administration" in order to have a better understanding of their individual role while serving the people. The qualifications for local elected officials does not require any type of political education nor experience - so you get what you vote into office, a lack of experience individuals running a newly formed city.
As Dr. Daniel Black spoke today @ "South Fulton Inaugural Interfaith Service" @ Kingdom of God his message was powerful and straight to the point - because we all know "The Storm is Coming" what's powerful is how will one respond to the storm.
