Can't We All Just Get Along- Yeah Right! (1285 hits)

FOURTH POST---I'm not sure if teh first couple worked:(

-Religion & Black Folks-
It's gut check time again. If you are not ready to explore your inner feelings and beliefs...leave now...don't read another word!
YOU'VE BEEN WARNED------

Can we unite as a people and still have different faith groups?
Must we all believe the same things?
Why must we separate mothers from daughters, fathers from sons, or sibling from sibling... over religion or lack of religion?

If I don't follow your set of beliefs can you still love me and accept me into your family? Can I break bread in your home, watch your kids, or marry someone in your church if I have a different God or belief system?

BUT WAIT!
Am I just trippin', is this a Black in America issue that we need to challenge?
Do we as African-Americans really segregate ourselves based solely on belief? Or is this too hot a topic for you to explore online...don't get scared now...I warned you!

Roderick,

How would you suggest we unite as a people if we can't get past this issue? Black folks do in fact have different faiths/ Gods (or no faith)...what can/should we do?

We can't remain divided! What's the fix?

I think we can spend less time focusing on what is different and embrace what we have in common. We also have to learn to accept anothers views, because doing so does not change who you are as a person. Unfortunately, Roderick I think your way of thinking not only creates a divide but it cuts you off from getting to know some wonderful people. So let's say I may not call God by the same name as you, but I do have a relationship with him, which is more important?

Thanks Marquerite for having the courage to respond. This is a tough issue for Black folks, but one we must confront.

Your welcome. If you don't learn anything else about me, you will learn that I have no problem discussing the tough issues with an honest response.
