TEACHING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN HEALTH TECHNOLOGY


Description
The Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (illinois.edu) is searching for an outstanding candidate for a nine-month, non-tenure track appointment at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor in Health Technology. Health Technology is a broad term for all consumer-facing technologies intended to support individuals in maintaining or improving their health and independence.


Responsibilities for the Teaching Assistant Professor in Health Technology include teaching required courses in the proposed MS in Health Technology program such as HT 501 - Understanding Users of Health Technology, HT 502 - Overview of Human Factors Methods for Health, and co-teaching HT 510 - Capstone Project Orientation and HT 511 - Capstone Project Development. In addition, responsibilities will include teaching courses for the Health Technology specialization in our MS and Ph.D. programs in Community Health and developing new elective courses for the graduate program and for undergraduate certificates.


Required Qualifications:



  • Successful completion of doctorate in public health, community health, kinesiology, psychology, human factors, or a related field by the start date of August 2019

  • A record of teaching and academic scholarship that meets qualifications for the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

  • Expertise in health technology, diverse user populations, or human-technology interaction


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Knowledge of community and industry resources in health technology

  • Experience in effective collaborations with faculty from a variety of disciplines

  • Experience teaching courses on health technology, diverse user populations, and human factors methods

  • Mentorship of internships or capstone experiences

  • Evidence of successful collaborations and/or ability to build relationships with industry, government, and/or community partners


Specialized Teaching Positions at University of Illinois
Teaching faculty positions are renewable, career-oriented, non-tenure-track positions. Initial appointments are typically at the rank of Instructor, Lecturer, or Teaching Assistant Professor, with the possibility of promotion to the ranks of Senior Instructor, Senior Lecturer, or Teaching Associate Professor, and Teaching Professor. Senior-level appointments are available for candidates with significant additional experience, stature, and demonstrated teaching excellence. Multi-year contracts may be available for the Teaching Professor track after the first year.

The University's College of Applied Health Sciences (ahs.illinois.edu) houses the Center on Health, Aging and Disability (CHAD), which includes the research program CHART: Collaborations in Health, Aging, Research, and Technology; the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES); and the Center for Wounded Veterans in Higher Education (CWVHE). The College is actively engaged in collaborative research with Carle Foundation Hospital, and the University's new engineering-based Carle Illinois College of Medicine promises further opportunities.


The Department of Kinesiology and Community Health includes Kinesiology, Community Health, I-Health (undergraduate program), as well as the Master of Public Health, Master of Health Administration, Master of Science in Community Health, Master of Science in Kinesiology, Ph.D. in Community Health, Ph.D. in Kinesiology, and the proposed Master of Science in Health Technology (in which the applicant will teach). Professors in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health generally pursue research aimed at improving the quality of life for all populations with diverse research and teaching interests. Faculty come from a broad set of academic backgrounds including psychology, public health, kinesiology, and community health. The Department hosts a diverse group of faculty, students, and staff.


Located within the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health is the proposed Master of Science in Health Technology (MSHT) program (note: proposal not yet approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education). The MSHT program is a collaboration between the Colleges of Applied Health Sciences and Engineering at the University of Illinois and will be a one year intensive 36-hour Master's program which culminates in the student's completion of a capstone project with industry, government, community organization, or academia. The program's mission is to develop interdisciplinary practitioners through classroom education and experiential learning to have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to advance applied health technology design and implementation. The proposed MSHT is part of a broader Health Technology Graduate and Continuing Education Program that will offer certificates, badges, and continuing education in various aspects of health technology.

Salary
Compensation is competitive and will be commensurate with the applicant's record.
