Assistant Director of Academic Services/Director of the Writing Center|
The Student Success Center (SSC) of Bellarmine University invites applications for the Assistant Director of Academic Services/Writing Center Director. This person will foster student learning and development by providing vision, leadership, best practices, and assessment for the Writing Center and work collaboratively with the Senior Director of Academic Services and colleagues in the Academic Services unit to deliver academic support in the areas of study skills, learning strategies, academic recovery, and the Testing Center. This position will work with other SSC staff, faculty from all schools, and campus partners to provide academic support and supervises Writing Center student staff. This person is also responsible for supervising 8 student employees. More specific duties include:
Writing Center Leadership, Expertise, Visibility
-Provide leadership and visibility for the Writing Center in the SSC working with the Senior Director of Academic Services.
-Promote the Writing Center across campus including print materials, social media, and web presence
-Collaborate with SSC colleagues, campus partners, faculty in all areas, Director of First-Year Writing, to raise awareness about Writing Center services and impact
-Collaborate with the International Programs Office to ensure that services are in place to support exchange and degree seeking international students
-Research and implement best practices
-Participate in professional development activities
-Provide consultancy services to campus constituents
-Leverage expertise in serving on committees
-Regularly review and revise the model, theory, and structure that the center uses to provide academic support
Writing Center Operations, Assessment, Data Management
-Maintain Writing Center space
-Maintain data management systems
-Provide regular and ad hoc reports on outcomes assessment to include direct/indirect and qualitative/quantitative measures
-Student learning outcomes and assessment
-Implement inclusive data collection and generation strategies
-Design, implement, and maintain a cyclical assessment plan to evaluate and demonstrate the efficacy of the campus-wide services provided in the Writing Center
-Implement change to support continuous improvement informed by assessment data
-Connect assessment process to SSC-wide assessment planning, reporting, and continuous improvement
Peer Tutor Supervision and Support
-Hiring- post positions, review applications, and interview
-Develop, plan, and implement regular training and professional development for all peer tutors
-Collaborate with other program directors in the SSC on opportunities for joint training/staff development activities
-Track and approve time for payroll and assessment purposes
-Manage scheduling in TutorTrac
-Be available/visible for peer tutors
-Conduct cyclical performance evaluations for all direct reports
Writing Center Programming and Professional Development
Support for the Academic Services Unit
-Work with the Senior Director of Academic Services to provide academic support services for the unit
-Strategically support the Senior Director in the Testing Center and the Tutoring Center.
-Support the Senior Director in the implementation of new programming including academic recovery and learning strategy sessions
-Attend regular SSC/Academic support team meetings
-Use the student alert system, FIRE, as a tool to identify at-risk students and connect them with appropriate resources.
-Teach BU 100 Freshman Focus (optional and in addition to regular responsibilities)
Review of resumes will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
This position is expected to begin on or after June 1, 2018.
Qualifications & Requirements
Requirements for this position include:
-Master's Degree in higher education, college student personnel, English composition, or related field
-Experience: At least one to three years full-time experience (or equivalent) with structuring academic support programming
-Working knowledge of writing centers, higher education, best practices, and academic support
-Excellent interpersonal communication and ability to connect with students individually or in small groups
-High-functioning leadership, planning and organization experience
-Pro-activeness and willingness to take the initiative
-Understanding how to structure and collaborate in a team environment
