Senior Scientist - Packaging


Plan, organize and perform a broad range of research and/or development activities focused on delivering innovative packaging materials & functional solutions, with focus on rigid and flexible barrier packaging for retort.  In the accomplishment of these duties, the person must utilize advanced and specialized knowledge to create differentiating technology while using professional judgement with minimal supervision.

1. Function as a technical leader and provide technical insight for product and packaging projects either as a project leader or team member
2. Function as a project team leader as assigned. Required activities include, but are not limited to:
• Provide effective project leadership for the projects assigned
• Plan, organize and perform the necessary trials and experiments as required
• Fulfill all requirements of the StageGate/Product Development Process and Nestec regarding deliverables for each phase
• Complete all required documentation and project reporting in a timely manner culminating in the Preliminary Manufacturing Dossier
• Work with PTC legal team to develop and deploy effective intellectual property protection strategy
3. Participate and contribute as a member of cross-functional teams as assigned. Contribute on project implementation teams by assisting with the hand-off from development through start-up and providing operational training as required.
4. Provide technical packaging assistance to a range of stakeholders on a wide variety of projects
5. Develop innovative new packages, materials and packaging concepts, as requested by the Markets and SBU.
6. Develop relationships and continue to stay connected to the global technology leaders in barrier packaging materials technologies, bringing these technology opportunities to Purina early and translating them into packaging solutions that provide competitive advantage.
7. Demonstrate technical leadership in the area of pet food packaging by searching for opportunities and implementing technology to improve the company manufacturing performance
8. Ensure no adverse palatability impact of new or modified packaging
9. Effectively communicate results through oral presentations and timely, written technical documentation and reports
10. Practice safety in the work area
11. Travel as necessary


• Develop effective relationships with the global packaging community in Purina, Nestle and the packaging vendor community to ensure that innovation and business opportunities are identified and exploited.
• Develop knowledge of Purina’s factory packaging equipment infrastructure and the associated economics related to manufacturing performance
• Participate in packaging reviews and cost reduction activities
• Assist Markets in the selection of packaging materials and the determination of product shelf life
• Develop testing methodologies for pet food packages and packaging materials
• Organize consumer testing to ensure optimized consumer experience
• Mentor and guide the less experienced technical staff
• Additional activities as assigned


• Mentoring and guidance as required for assigned projects
• Supervision required should be minimal

Qualifications & Requirements

JOB QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, and Knowledge):

• B.S. in Packaging, Materials Science, or a related discipline
• A minimum of eight years of experience
• Knowledge of food packaging materials and structures, especially for barrier, retort packaging, and their impact on performance and environmental sustainability
• Knowledge of packaging conversion technologies: thermoforming and injection molding for rigid plastic containers; film making, printing, and lamination for flexible materials
• Knowledge of testing methods of packaging materials performance
• Strong project management and organizational skills with ablity to manage multiple projects/priorities
• Good communication and interpersonal skills with ability to both lead projects and to work effectively with project teams
• Proven ability to create original, differentiating technology and apply technical knowledge to meet business needs


• Advanced degree preferred
• Factory and/or packaging conversion experience
• Knowledge of factory packaging equipment technologies to form, fill, and seal packages
• Knowledge of package recycling, composting, and life cycle analysis
• Knowledge of packaging chemical safety
• Fundamental knowledge of food science and food processing
• Broad range of technical knowledge outside area of specialty
