The Department of Art and Design at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks a Teaching Professor of Graphic Design beginning in the fall 2020. The ideal candidate will have an excellent teaching record (a minimum of two-years in a BFA Graphic Design program) and a body of work in graphic design and art that exhibits a broad understanding of contemporary practice and theory. The candidate should be well versed in teaching core undergraduate graphic and web design course content such as design thinking, design systems, typography for print and web, identity design, motion graphics, and the capstone course sequence. S/He will provide education through learning-centered instruction that will enable graduates to understand and place their work in the historical and theoretical context of design practice and tradition. The Art and Design Department emphasizes conceptual and aesthetic innovation while encouraging student-centered pedagogy. The candidate will be engaged in helping students conceptualize community-based initiatives as well as preparing them for a graphic design professional practice. Our graduates seek careers as graphic designers, web designers, web developers, UX/UI designers, interactive designers, and motion graphics designers. Candidate should also have a strong record of a graphic design professional practice including client-based work, exhibitions, and public speaking. The successful candidate is expected to be a practitioner of contemporary design.
Teaching faculty fill a vital role within the department and college, with an emphasis on teaching, student advising, student success initiatives, and other forms of service to the department, college, and university. The teaching load is three courses per semester. The position is renewable based on excellence in teaching and service activities. Teaching Faculty starting salaries are commensurate with years of teaching experience, with the range comparable to that of assistant research professors within the department. Following six years of service, teaching faculty are eligible to apply for promotion to the position of Associate Teaching Professor, with these salary ranges comparable to those of associate professors within the Department of Art and Design.
The Department of Art & Design is housed within the University’s College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (FAHSS). The College is the largest unit of the University, with 11 academic departments and over 200 full-time faculty. FAHSS has experienced significant growth in recent years, including hiring more than 75 new faculty members, achieving 70 percent growth in funded research expenditures, and the addition of several new interdisciplinary graduate programs.
The Art and Design Department currently has 8 tenured and tenure track faculty members, 5 teaching professors, and 2 visiting faculty.
The Art Department emphasizes conceptual and aesthetic innovation while encouraging student-centered pedagogy. We have a NASAD accredited BFA program housed in a tech savvy and science rich university. The department has 3 concentrations: Studio, animation, graphic design. We are working on an accredited Graphic Design BFA. Our average student population is steady at 200 with 8 computer labs, a center for large scale printing, a laser cutter, VR lab and 3D printing. Similar resources are available throughout the campus. Our student job placement in creative field’s rate is high. We are working for 100% student retention year to year and a 4-year graduation average. We feature art/design study abroad courses in Portugal, Italy and England and we are open to proposals in other locations. Faculty at UML often collaborate across disciplines for richer learning.

The full-time faculty annual teaching load is 18 credits. Full-time faculty have a 3/3 undergraduate teaching load, maintain regular office hours, be available for advising students, recruitment and/or department activities and related duties, including committee work. Individuals are sought who can work collaboratively with their colleagues, staff and administration and who can work strategically across the College to support recruitment and retention.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
• BFA in Graphic Design or a BFA in Communication Design
• Earned MFA degree in Graphic Design/ Graphic Communication
• 2 years of teaching experience at the university level
• Portfolio that demonstrates success in creative and professional practice
• Demonstrates understanding of theoretical and critical aspects of graphic design
• Strong understanding of typography and its application in professional practice (traditional and screen-based)
• Broad understanding of graphic design, design history, design process and contemporary design issues
• High level of technical proficiency with current digital media and graphic design applications and programs including excellent knowledge of the Adobe suite
• Technical skills in motion graphics
• Skills in HTML & CSS, frameworks (e.g. Bootstrap) and CMS (such as Wordpress)
• Fluency in one or two practice areas, such as Interactive Design, Web Design, Motion Graphics, UX/UI, etc.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience with a diverse student body
• Experience in promoting programs and building curricular and co-curricular activities
• Experience with additive and subtractive prototyping (3D printing and laser cutting)
• Solid understanding of photography, and illustration as those fields apply to art direction and graphic design
