Job Description
Tenure-Track Assistant Professor - Foundations
University of Massachusetts Lowell

The Department of Art and Design at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Foundations beginning in the Fall 2020.

The search committee is interested in reviewing applicants who have a substantial record of accomplishment in their field, as demonstrated by museum/gallery exhibitions or presentations in other venues relevant to their practice. All fields within the visual arts will be considered. Preference will be given to candidates who are conversant with interdisciplinary thought and practice and demonstrate innovative approaches in their research. Additionally, candidates must provide evidence of an ongoing commitment to significant, innovative, and forward-looking scholarship/creative work that could lead to tenure and promotion after a five-year probationary period. A demonstrable record of grants, residencies, and reviews in noted journals, news sources, and publications will also reflect favorably on the candidate.

The candidate should be well versed in teaching core undergraduate foundation courses such as 2D design & basic sculpture, Digital Foundations, and Drawing. Experience with new media and innovative technologies would be advantageous. We are looking for someone who will participate in collaborative curriculum development with the rest of the department as well as initiating interdisciplinary collaborations across campus.

The successful candidate will provide education through learning-centered instruction that will enable students to begin to understand and place their work in a historical and contemporary context. The Art and Design Department emphasizes conceptual and aesthetic innovation while encouraging student-centered pedagogy. Experience with first generation college students is a plus. The candidate will help students develop a sound foundation in a program that prepares students for careers in animation and interactive media, graphic design, and studio art. The ideal candidate should also have experience relating to and working with students of diverse backgrounds.

This position fills a vital role within the department and college, with an emphasis on research, teaching, student advising, student success initiatives, and other forms of service to the department, college, and university. The position is a 3/3 base teaching load, with reductions for creative and research work and faculty who are active in creative/research generally teach a 3/2 or 2/2 workload. Art studio courses are 5 hours & 30 minutes per week.

In addition, full-time faculty must maintain regular office hours, be available for advising students, recruitment and/or department activities and related duties, including committee work. Individuals are sought who can work collaboratively with their colleagues, staff and administration and who can work strategically across the College to support recruitment and retention.

The Department of Art & Design is housed within the University’s College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (FAHSS). The College is the largest unit of the University, with 11 academic departments and over 200 full-time faculty. FAHSS has experienced significant growth in recent years, including hiring more than 75 new faculty members, achieving 70 percent growth in funded research expenditures, and the addition of several new interdisciplinary graduate programs.
