Job Summary

Reports to: Executive Director, LSA, Eastern States

Position Summary: The College is looking for a Major Gift Officer serving the Southeast Regional market (Pennsylvania, North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama) who will manage, identify, cultivate and solicit individual donor prospects for the College. They will develop and manage a portfolio of prospects and donors by securing major and planned gifts of $100,000 or more on behalf of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. They will report to the Executive Director, LSA, Eastern Region and work closely with the Assistant Dean of LSA Advancement, Dean of LSA, Department Chairs, faculty and University-wide development colleagues to achieve positive outcomes.

Salary Range: The target salary for the Associate position is in the mid-60s; the target salary for the Intermediate position is in the mid-70s.

Responsibilities*
70 %: Prospect Management and Solicitation

Represent the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts in the Southeastern US Region.
Identify, and formally qualify new major and planned gift prospects by developing and executing long-range and short-range strategies to cultivate, solicit and steward them, producing a continuous stream of donors capable of making gifts of $100,000 or more to the College.
Emphasis on the management of existing donors, discovery visits and portfolio building is expected.
Conduct 125-150 face to face visits with prospects and donors per year, and participate in 20-30 solicitations per year.
Gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and life-time giving potential of individual prospects.
Ensure consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate or make solicitations, and ensure effective stewardship.
15%: Partnership with Campus Colleagues

Maintain accurate and current records and document activity in donor and alumni database, and share with Executive Director, LSA, Eastern Region and other colleagues as necessary for transparency.
Partner with the Executive Director, LSA, Eastern Region, LSA prospect research and data analytics team, and University Development colleagues, to develop, plan and execute successful fundraising strategies.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with academic and other unit colleagues on campus, by demonstrating leadership in the development community.
Build a knowledge base of LSA academic content that can be used to assist prospective donors in clarifying how they direct their philanthropy.
Serve as a content expert and fundraising liaison to four LSA departments.
10%: Development of LSA Strategy and Prospects in the Region

Participate in the planning and leadership of the overall strategy for major and planned giving in the Southeast region with focus on prospects under personal management and by supporting and/or facilitating solicitations directed by other U-M development staff.
Develop a strategic engagement pipeline and events plan for the region.
Advise senior leadership on donor strategy and trip planning.
Develop market awareness of LSA throughout the region.
5%: Volunteer Management

Assist with volunteer structures in recruiting and sustaining a strong and diverse volunteer network to assist in prospect identification, cultivation, and solicitation, as well as to provide expanded opportunities for key prospects to engage with the College and the University as a whole.
Contribute to the development of regional volunteer groups.
Perform other responsibilities and participate in College events as appropriate. This includes, but is not limited to, campus-wide activities, on and off-campus donor activities, and other College events.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree and one to three (1-3+) years of professional experience in direct fundraising and/or relevant experience in alumni outreach, sales, marketing or other related fields.
Passion for the University of Michigan and the liberal arts.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and organizational skills with an entrepreneurial mindset.
Experience with travel to markets and securing appointments.
Demonstrated excellent problem solving, conflict resolution and customer service skills.
Demonstrated sound knowledge of laws, practices and philosophy of charitable and planned giving.
Demonstrated track record of financial development and/or sales productivity in a complex work environment.
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google (Docs, Spreadsheets, Slides).
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Experience working independently as well as effectively in teams.
Must have the ability to work comfortably and professionally with broad and diverse constituencies, ranging from students to staff to faculty to high net-worth individuals and volunteers.
Must demonstrate excellent judgment with a polished professional demeanor and presentation.
Ability to maintain a collegial relationship with administrative and academic departments.
Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Willingness to actively participate in and support a positive work culture.

Desired Qualifications*

Demonstrated three (3) to five (5) years of higher education fundraising experience.
Demonstrated track record in negotiating and closing six figure and higher outright and planned gifts.
Working knowledge of the University organizational policies, rules, regulations, procurement and purchasing.
Demonstrated ability to work within a campus culture that includes a diverse array of personalities, and cohesively manage conflicting expectations.
Experience with DART, MPathways, BusinessObjects
