Job Description
Communications Intern - Summer 2020
The Communications team collaborates with program teams and other colleagues across the Foundation to create and implement strategic communications plans that enhance the impact of MacArthur and its grantees in all fields of work. The team is responsible for the Foundation's strategic efforts to communicate with the press, public, and policymakers, leading media relations, creating web and social media content, producing grantee stories, and planning public events. The team also provides communications support and advice to MacArthur’s leadership, staff, and grantees.

The intern will join the Foundation’s Communications team, which seeks to enhance the impact of MacArthur’s grantmaking by –
• Drawing attention to and sharing information about the fields in which MacArthur is engaged;
• Spotlighting grantees; and
• Ensuring transparency about Foundation grantmaking and operations.

The team achieves these objectives by employing diverse communications tactics, including media relations, social media, web content, live and digital events, publications, and communications support for MacArthur staff and grantees.
Qualifications & Requirements
Job Description
General Summary of Internship:

The intern will balance short- and long-term projects. Day-to-day work will include –

Organizing a briefing for Chicago-area interns about MacArthur’s work and the field of philanthropy;
Researching and drafting briefs and stories for the Foundation’s website about the work of our grantees;
Helping brainstorm and create social media content;
Identifying and summarizing media coverage;
Helping to plan and staff public events;
Researching media outlets and building media lists; and
Other responsibilities, as directed.
Longer-term projects vary; past examples included –

Researching news coverage of MacArthur Fellows and other MacArthur grantees;
Researching annual reports of other foundations and nonprofits; and
Examining how other foundations and nonprofits use social media.
The internship is designed to be a substantive learning experience, so the intern will join Communications team meetings and staff events and attend in-house briefings by grantees, staff, and other practitioners.

The internship is not focused on any one social issue or any particular area of MacArthur’s grantmaking. It will be of great value to those candidates interested in communications, especially as a tool for social change.

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will have a demonstrated interest in communications, journalism, public relations, new media, and/or public affairs. Strong written and oral communication skills, outstanding organizational abilities, and attention to detail are essential. Experience with social media, photography, or video is a plus.

Application Process:
Students must be returning to school next fall to be eligible. Candidates should address a cover letter to Kristen Mack, Director of Communications, explaining their interest along with a resume and two writing samples of no longer than two pages each. Additional materials, such as a website or digital portfolio, are also welcome.
