Journalism and Media Intern - Summer 2020
The Journalism and Media team is responsible for working to strengthen American democracy by informing, engaging, and activating people in the United States through deep investments in organizations that produce and support accurate, just, and inclusive news and narratives. The team supports three areas of work: Professional Nonprofit Reporting, Nonfiction Multimedia Storytelling, and Participatory Civic Media.

Job Description

General Summary of Internship:

Assist the MacArthur Foundation’s Journalism and Media program team in awarding grants in support of professional nonprofit reporting, nonfiction multimedia storytelling, and participatory civic media organizations in the United States.
Conduct internet-based research about the distribution and impact of MacArthur-supported documentary films, and journalistic investigations.
Assist with short-term research projects about trends in funding and in the production, distribution, and demand for investigative reporting at the local (with a special focus on Chicagoland), national, and international level), nonfiction multimedia storytelling, and participatory civic media.
Support the planning and facilitation of public events and grantee convenings.
Qualifications & Requirements
Qualifications:
Competitive applicants will have a deep interest in and some knowledge of journalism and media, including (but not limited to) investigative reporting, accountability reporting, documentary film, interactive new media, global reporting, participatory media, and media-based organizing, at the local and national level. Strong writing and research skills a plus. Preference will be given to applicants with deep familiarity with Chicago.
