Public Policy and Advocacy Office

Since 1945, ALA’s Public Policy and Advocacy Office (PPA) in Washington, D.C., has worked to ensure that libraries are consistently, actively, and constructively involved in all relevant federal legislative and policy decision-making processes of importance to the library field and in the public interest. Key issues include copyright, personal privacy, public access to government information and critical telecommunications resources, open access to research, and federal support for public and school libraries and other library programs. PPA is charged with following and influencing legislation, policy and regulatory issues of importance to the library field and its public.


Reporting to PPA’s deputy director of Advocacy Communications, this internship will assist with the collection of media stories about libraries; conduct research related to public policy issues; answer virtual reference questions via email; and help with special projects like information organization, cataloging, and helping to process archival materials. The intern(s) will work closely with several members of the PPA team.

This is a terrific opportunity for a student who is currently pursuing a degree in Library Science. The intern will gain experience in research and archiving special materials related to the history of the American Library Association.

Qualifications & Requirements
• Students Interested in legislative and policy as it relates to librarianship, strong research and communications skills. Current library science students will be given preference.
• About 14 hours per week (two full days), Monday - Friday. Estimated length of assignment - 10 weeks.
• Internships are available year-round.
