The Office of Innovation & Commercialization (OIC) is supporting a campus-wide innovation platform to build a systemic, inclusive, and sustainable innovation culture, drive social and economic prosperity through the creation of a vibrant regional ecosystem, and accelerate the commercialization of UC San Diego inventions. In close consultation with the AVC-OIC the Director of Business Affairs & Commercialization will provide high level management and advising for a comprehensive intellectual property and technology agreements program for the campus that is aligned and integrated with the overall goals of the campus leadership and OIC. The Director will, in association with the AVC-OIC, set a customer-oriented solutions-driven direction and focus for the Intellectual Property and Commercialization units, with an emphasis on building long-term sustainable relationships with UC San Diego researchers and the private sector, and developing relationships between researchers and companies. The Director will exercise maximum initiative and sound leadership within the parameters of department and university policies and regulations to assist the AVC-OIC in accomplishing the goals and objectives of the Office of Innovation and Commercialization and will work as part of the leadership team to define and implement the strategic direction for the office, particularly as it relates to the commercialization functions.

The Director will represent the AVC-OIC in the review and approval of selected business arrangements and agreements, execute business agreements in accordance with delegated authority, represent the office and the campus at professional meetings, conferences, and investment and economic development meetings and events, and assist the AVC-OIC in organizing and optimizing the oversight of intellectual property agreements and activities. The Director is responsible for providing general operational oversight, training, and mentoring to professional staff within the Intellectual Property and Commercialization units.

The Director will oversee the transfer of UC San Diego-owned research materials, and will advise on the educational and service programs provided to the campus community and relating to material transfer issues and awareness. The Director will advise the AVC-I&C on organizing and optimizing the general operations of the commercialization functions for OIC, consisting of the Intellectual Property and Commercialization groups.

The Director has the full scope of responsibilities for overseeing issues regarding the negotiation of agreements, licensees, contracts, and evaluating portfolio inventions in various stages of development. The incumbent will serve as a liaison for faculty and staff across all UCSD offices to aid in developing technology development strategies and to ensure compliance with University-wide and campus policies. Extensive interaction is required with campus researchers, senior campus administrators, potential industry partners, patent and contract attorneys, industrial scientists, senior business development executives, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. The Director will represent the university throughout the community in building relationships with industry, investors, entrepreneurs, sponsors, underrepresented groups, and others in the community who can partner with the university to further our economic development goals.

Qualifications & Requirements
• Graduation from college with a major in business administration, economics, operations research, engineering, a physical science, or an allied field, and ten years of experience working with Intellectual Property and/or Technology Agreements; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's degree in related area and extensive experience or advanced degree preferred.
• Strong financial, management and leadership skills. Demonstrated effective managerial, supervisory, leadership and communication skills.
• Understands and appreciates research enterprise in an academic institution as it relates to intellectual property and technology commercialization.
• Excellent project management skills to handle a portfolio of diverse UCSD innovations in a wide variety of scientific disciplines.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse audiences. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills to interact with UCSD researchers and potential licensees from the industry.
• A track record of managing a diverse and high-performing team, and demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
• Expert understanding of applicable laws / policies / principles for intellectual property / technology transfer / commercialization, economic development, private-public partnerships and has excellent connections to further these initiatives.
• In-depth understanding of national and international developments in the management of IP license and related agreements.
• Advanced negotiation skills and strategic thinking requisite for sustained, high-level interactions with government agencies, industry and other private sector sponsors.
• Facility with commercialization tools for use in office and IP portfolio management
• Significant cross-cultural work experience in both industry and higher education environment especially relating to intellectual property and commercialization activities.
• Proven ability to accept new innovations and to understand technologies and their real-world, commercial applications as evidenced by an advanced scientific degree, successful research and development experience, and/or training in business administration and/or intellectual property and contract laws. Legal language skill is important.
• Demonstrated success in technology licensing as evidenced by contracts negotiated with established and startup companies.
• Demonstrated ability to visualize potential practical utilities of new discoveries and results of basic scientific investigations. Skills in bridging basic research and applied uses of its results.
• Working experience in academic and/or industrial settings.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality in all areas of responsibility.
• Skills in market research and projection and valuation of technologies. Comfortable with using databases and on-line resources to assess up-to-date market and company information.
• Advanced negotiation skills to obtain reasonable license terms and conditions while maintaining the university's long-term relationship with industry.
• Proven experience in industry engagement and creating partnerships to broaden licensing and sponsorship base and enhance institutional outreach.
• Proven ability to provide effective leadership in a diverse, ever-changing, and unpredictable environment.
• Demonstrated high level skill in assessing needs and developing strategies to support diversity and inclusion
• Aptitude, understanding and appreciation for inclusive innovation with self-directed motivation for encouraging and driving inclusive innovation initiatives and activities that may yield meaningful outcomes and help further UC San Diego’s mission of Inclusive Excellence.
• Solid communications skills with the ability to speak and write about technical and scientific research persuasively and creatively and presenting to academic and industry audiences.
• Proven strong political acumen skills and ability to apply in diverse, complex organization. Proven ability to apply high ethical standards to business practices and decision-making. Ability to lead by example. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership that motivates and develops staff and creates a positive work environment.
