Editorial Director
Kensington Publishing Corp. is seeking a passionate and market-aware Editorial Director to lead Dafina Books, Kensington’s imprint dedicated to stories and voices of the Black Diaspora. You will be responsible for discovering and acquiring authors, managing author relationships and the editorial process, as well as collaborating with marketing, publicity, design, and production. An ideal candidate would be someone looking to manage and grow an established book imprint with innovative ideas.
Dafina is an imprint of Kensington Publishing Corp., focusing on quality fiction and non-fiction that centers race, identity, and its impact on our experiences. Dafina’s carefully curated list is a home for dynamic stories that innovate and amplify voices too long ignored, through books that entertain, challenge, and inspire. Launched in 2000 as the first African American imprint, Dafina has led the market for more than 20 years in highlighting voices of color. Dafina publishes titles in Hardcover, Trade Paperback, and Mass Market.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
• Expand the Dafina Adult Trade list by acquiring a small list of key titles focused on Black literature and nonfiction as well as managing select existing imprint authors.
• Strategize with the Publishing Team on positioning titles and how to grow Dafina in new ways to include a broader range of voices from the Black Diaspora.
• Identify, evaluate, and develop submissions, projects, and proposals.
• Work closely with authors to develop and edit their work for publication.
• Collaborate closely with internal teams throughout the publishing process from acquisition to publication including sales, marketing, publicity, art design, copy, etc.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with literary agents.
• Monitor trend and sales data.
• Identify categories to explore for growth potential, with an awareness of current trends.
• Present titles at internal and external meetings.
• Option to acquire for the General Kensington list with a focus on historically marginalized voices.
Qualifications & Requirements QUALIFICATIONS
• 5 or more years of editorial/publishing experience or other qualifying experience.
• Ability to juggle multiple priorities and take initiative.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Critical reading skills/editorial eye.
