The Opportunity Agenda is seeking a highly experienced and innovative communicator for the new role of Lead Narrative Strategist. The creation of this new leadership role represents a doubling of the organization’s investment in social justice narrative change and research strategy capacity and is an essential part of the organization’s growing impact.
The Lead Narrative Strategist will work with the Director of Narrative & Research to create a new team of staff and external contributors who will design, manage, and evaluate The Opportunity Agenda’s narrative shift strategies, content and tools.
The winning candidate will have led winning social justice narrative campaigns and communications teams, and now wants to bring what they know to organizations and leaders across the country. They are an inspiring writer who has developed impactful content, tools, and messaging guidance, as well as managed people and high-level consultants and firms. The ideal candidate also has a familiarity with cultural strategies and is eager to collaborate in that area as well. The successful candidate will also have a deep understanding of, and experience within, the field of racial justice.
Reporting to the Director of Narrative & Research, the Lead Narrative Strategist is an independent and collaborative leader. The Lead Narrative Strategist is based remotely and regular travel is required as the global health situation allows.


Narrative Shift Program Management & Design

• Lead the Narrative Strategies & Content team including managing staff, external contributors, budgets and deliverables.
• Design measurable narrative shift campaigns to meet the organizational and partner narrative goals.
• Work in consultation with colleagues and external partner leaders on a variety of issue areas to identify narrative shift goals and create strategies to achieve them.
• Identify key outcomes and success indicators for various aspects of narrative change work including training, messaging and narrative tool development, digital and traditional media placement, and cultural strategies.
• Work with partners in the field and colleagues to determine narrative and messaging needs and promote communications tools, media strategy support, research, and training opportunities.
• Publicly represent the organization in convenings, trainings, strategy sessions and more.
• Work with colleagues to identify trends, best practices and cutting-edge strategies to help social justice communicators become more effective.

Narrative and Messaging Tools and Content Development

• Manage the marketing, narrative & messaging tool development program: identify partner and field needs, create timelines as well as assign & manage writers and/or consultants when appropriate.
• Write, edit and/or approve communications tools including messaging guides, toolkits, and digital content based on research findings and partner/field experience.
• Work with outreach and cultural strategies colleagues to develop multi-media and cultural tools that further project organizational projects and goals.
• Understand and integrate The Opportunity Agenda’s opinion research, media analysis, into narrative, framing and messaging recommendations.
• Contribute to the development of training curriculums that incorporate The Opportunity Agenda’s opinion research, media analysis, framing, and messaging recommendations.
• Contribute to The Opportunity Agenda’s progress reports, briefings, proposals, and blog.

• Thorough understanding of communications research methods such as public opinion studies, discourse analysis, message testing, deep canvassing and others.
• Demonstrated experience in creating and leading winning social justice communications campaigns and initiatives.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Excellent ability to create written content and strategies designed to reach a wide range of audiences.
• Demonstrated expertise in narrative shift strategy.
• Ability to educate program staff and partners about narrative concepts and methods.
• Skilled in developing and implementing effective communication plans and materials.
• Ability to proactively identify and creatively solve problems.
• A commitment to social justice and to The Opportunity Agenda’s mission.
• Cultural fluency with diverse audiences and coalitions.
• Ability to work well with limited day-to-day supervision.
• Demonstrated people management skills.
• A sense of humor and a collaborative spirit.
• Spanish language fluency desirable but not required.

• At least seven years social justice communications experience with at least five years of leading communications teams.
• Five plus years of experience in messaging strategy design and communications tool development.
• Demonstrated track record of creating narrative change strategies for social justice organizations and campaigns.
• Excellent ability to communicate with and support a wide range of non-profit social justice issues-based leaders, directly impacted people, and organizations.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training in writing preferred.
• Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in evaluating communications efforts.

The incumbent will have daily interaction with all internal departments and will have frequent interaction with stakeholders.

• Ability to conduct extensive hours of work at a computer with reasonable accommodations is required.
• Ability to travel via airplane and ground transportation once or twice per month and quarterly work in the New York City office is required as the global health situation allows.
• Covid-19 vaccination required to work in the office.

Consists of a combination of all of the following:
• Home or remote work environment appropriate for phone, video meetings and presentations.
• Business office environments.
