The Opportunity Agenda seeks an experienced Manager of Media Strategy to develop and oversee the organization’s earned media approaches. Reporting directly to the Director of Strategic Communications and Network Engagement, this position will identify opportunities and pursue strategic relationships to promote and elevate TOA’s brand and messaging expertise. This position will also build and implement traditional media outreach and placement systems at the local, state, and national levels, with a focus on pitching The Opportunity Agenda staff and fellows. The Manager will engage The Opportunity Agenda’s network of social justice leaders, activists, and influencers in shared campaigns and efforts to build narrative and cultural power to overcome white supremacy and create opportunity for all.
This individual is an experienced and outstanding writer and publicist responsible for supervising media placements for the organization’s fellows and staff, writing collateral and other materials for members of the media, and advancing the organization’s brand. This individual must be seasoned in media outreach and relations with a proven track record. The Manager must be clear about the organization’s voice and be able to determine ways to increase the breadth and scope of its presence in the media at the national, state, and local levels. It is also essential that this person work well both individually in managing projects, as well as collaboratively as part of a team.


Develop and Implement the Organization’s Media Strategy

• Drive press strategies for The Opportunity Agenda’s campaigns and projects, as well as uplift staff expertise and leadership, including short- and long-term press outreach.
• Draft, ghostwrite, edit, and distribute content for the media, including press statements, media advisories, quotes, talking points, op-eds, letters to the editor, and other media materials.
• Translate organizational content into media-friendly language for media materials.
• Pitch story ideas, staff spokespeople, and organizational viewpoints to journalists, editors, producers, and commentators to further organizational and programmatic goals.
• In partnership with the Director of Strategic Communications and Network Engagement, identify and determine breaking news opportunities and coordinate the organization’s rapid response communications to advance the organization’s voice, profile, and narrative goals.
• Serve as a spokesperson for the organization.
• Train staff to be effective media spokespeople.
• Monitor, track, and assess media coverage.

Manage and Cultivate Media Relations

• Field media inquiries.
• Establish new and maintain existing relationships with reporters, editorial staff, columnists, bookers, producers, hosts, and bloggers.
• Build, maintain, and expand press lists on key issue areas using TOA’s contact database and media monitoring service.
• Arrange press events and background briefings.
• Identify, hire, and manage public relations firms and consultants to place The Opportunity Agenda staff and partners in target media outlets.

Manage and Cultivate Fellow Engagement and Media Placement

• Work closely with the organization’s fellows to identify news and cultural hooks, determine storytelling approach (including op-eds, think pieces, interviews, etc.), and pursue media placements that further the fellows’ policy, advocacy, and creative strategy goals, while also lifting up their relationship with TOA.
• Provide media guidance and support to fellows, including assistance with writing for the media, interview preparation, and more.
• In collaboration with the Training team, provide significant support in the planning and execution of the annual Communications Institute and serve as a trainer by creating and presenting a media-centric curriculum (including spokesperson and message training) to all participating fellows.

• At least 6 years of relevant experience, including a proven track record of media placement.
• Master’s degree or its equivalent in journalism, communications, public relations, or a related field.
• A demonstrated ability to write well and quickly for a variety of target audiences.
• Demonstrated experience working in the social justice sector.
• Experience with CISION and BrandWatch a plus.

• Excellent writer with strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
• Imaginative thinker with keen understanding of traditional media approaches while knowing when and how to pivot to creative strategies.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate in a variety of styles to match organizational and individual brands.
• Experience working with diverse teams or coalitions on collaborative projects.
• Deep commitment to The Opportunity Agenda’s values and goals.
• A strong working knowledge of social justice issues, organizations, and leaders.
• Established relationships with journalists and other media professionals.
• Track record of successfully placing stories, op-eds, and other content in national, state, and local media outlets.
• Former journalists with experience pitching news media are strongly preferred
• Multilingual skills highly valued.

The incumbent will have daily interaction with all internal departments and will have occasional interaction with stakeholders.

• Ability to conduct extensive hours of work at a computer with reasonable accommodations is required.
• Covid-19 vaccination required to work in the office.
• Ability to travel via airplane and ground transportation approximately quarterly is required (as the global health situation allows).

Consists of a combination of all the following:
• A variety of remote venues required, including a home-work environment appropriate for phone, video, video meetings, and presentations.
• Business office environment.
