Director, Professional Development
This position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Lifelong Learning and provides oversight of the development, marketing, and execution of educational programs dedicated to professional and personal development for alumni in support of the Forever Learning initiative. Working with faculty and university administrators, alumni, the Alumni Engagement and Development (AED) staff, and vendors, the Director manages in-person programs on campus and in the regions, online courses, and other virtual opportunities available to alumni in support of strategic goals. The Director will also manage the work of other members of the Lifelong Learning team on programs and resources related to professional development for alumni.

Work Performed

Program Development and Execution

Develop and execute programs for alumni and their families that supports their professional and personal development.
Identify and recruit faculty, senior administrators, and alumni as speakers for and partners in programs. Work with faculty on the development of program content and support materials.
Collaborate and coordinate with AED partners who support and develop career-focused programs and resources to provide constituent-focused opportunities that achieve strategic goals and drive engagement on campus, online, and in the regions.
Evaluate and refine programs using comprehensive reports and data to improve outcomes and build engagement.
Ensure program-related data is appropriated coded and managed.
Oversee all project-related administrative functions. Share supervisory responsibility for program staff on projects as appropriate.

Collaborate with university-wide colleagues

Build relationships with campus partners to feature Duke’s resources and innovative programs, top-notch researchers, and new initiatives in educational programs for alumni.
Serve as advisor and resource to key partners including Learning Innovations and Continuing Studies on the development of new professional development courses, certificate programs, and other continuing education opportunities.
Represent the Lifelong Learning team on the Alumni Careers Roundtable and other professional development and career-focused initiatives at Duke.

Marketing and Communications

Coordinate and collaborate with the AED Marketing, Communications and Stewardship team on the implementation of comprehensive marketing concepts for programs available for alumni, working in collaboration other AED teams and campus partners.
Develop and support the creation of the Forever Learning Newsletter, including special issues dedicated to professional development
Communicate with program participants and potential participants, including faculty and administrators, both in writing and in one-on-one interactions to provide information and handle questions and complaints

Support the work of Lifelong Learning programming and broader AED initiatives

Represent Duke University and AED at select functions and events, including serving as the Duke Host on specific programs.
Generate and share reports and presentations that demonstrate the work done by the Lifelong Learning team to other schools, units, and volunteers as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.


Work requires the ability to plan and administer programs and direct program activities within a specific functional area, generally acquired through four years of related experience. OR ANYOTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
