In the 2022 fiscal year, UW Medicine Advancement raised $284 million in gifts and private grants (46 percent of the University of Washington’s total) from nearly 14,000 donors to support the mission of UW Medicine.
The Director for Alumni Relations is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive alumni program that meets the needs of the alumni constituency while meeting the strategic objectives of the UW School of Medicine (School of Medicine) and UW Medicine. The Director is responsible for creating programs that encourage alumni, students, and parents/family members to develop life-long relationships with the School of Medicine, actively participate in programs that serve the School of Medicine’s and UW Medicine’s current goals and objectives, and encourages constituents to support the School of Medicine and UW Medicine through private giving. The School of Medicine serves as the largest medical school for the states of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI) and the alumni program must reflect this geographic diversity.
This position has a primary worksite of UW Medicine’s South Lake Union campus. A hybrid work arrangement is available to work onsite a minimum of two days per week and work remote up to three days per week.
Alumni and Student Engagement:
• Develop a comprehensive and innovative alumni program that meets the needs of the alumni constituency while meeting the strategic objectives of the UW School of Medicine and UW Medicine. These programs must reflect and respond to the needs of the five states that the School of Medicine serves. The Director must also respond to interests of a diverse alumni constituency including MD graduates, residents, fellows, MEDEX alumni and those who completed a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in various fields.
• Collaborate with the Offices of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Regional Affairs, Healthcare Equity and others to create opportunities for current students/residents/fellows to interact with alumni. Develop and support student and trainee activities that support a life-long relationship with the School of Medicine.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive Reunion program that encourages alumni to engage in the current life of the School of Medicine and support Reunion giving programs.
• Serve as a key member of the advancement team in identifying and cultivating potential alumni donors. Make 8-10 personal identification/cultivation visits with alumni per month to assess their interests as volunteers and their potential as donors.
• Develop an annual calendar of in person, hybrid or virtual events to support program objectives. Develop a strategy to produce effective events in both the Seattle area and in the WWAMI states. Coordinate activities with the Dean’s and Vice Dean’s calendar, professional meetings, development activities, and other offices in the School of Medicine.
• Develop communication and marketing strategies to engage alumni in the current activities of the School of Medicine. Provide alumni content for monthly alumni e-newsletters and up to three print newsletters per year.
• Serve as Director of the UW School of Medicine Alumni Association and ex-officio member of the UW School of Medicine Alumni Association Board of Directors.
• Develop an alumni board model and structure that is reflective of all alumni constituencies and the WWAMI region. Provide guidance to the Board as to how the Association can best serve the interests of the School of Medicine and its alumni. Provide staff support for the Board and its committees.
• Expand alumni volunteer base. Actively identify alumni and student leaders to participate in alumni activities. Develop training, educational, and recognition opportunities for volunteers.
• The Director for Alumni Relations has overall supervisory responsibility for one professional staff member. This responsibility includes formal decisions/recommendations regarding hiring, performance evaluations, promotions, salary adjustments, and disciplinary actions.
• Prepare an annual operating plan outlining goals and measurable results. Manage the budgets and finances of Alumni Relations and the UW School of Medicine Alumni Association in compliance with UW and UW Medicine policies and state/federal laws.
Qualifications & Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree with five or more years of increasingly responsible alumni program, advancement or educational institution experience.

• Ability to make decisions in ambiguous situations, exercise good judgment based on information and analysis in a fast pace, dynamic, deadline-driven environment in an organized and professional manner.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint). Willingness and ability to learn how to use the UW’s donor CRM system and other proprietary software products.
• Alumni or development experience in a University and/or medical college setting.
• Experience with professional school graduates preferred.
• Experience with public relations and marketing experience is helpful.
