Director, ECHO Initiatives (Grant Funded)
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the nation’s leading advocacy organization for children’s healthcare, is seeking a strong mentor to direct the operations and strategic growth of the Project ECHO (Extension for Community Health Care Outcomes) Superhub and provide oversight of all partners. This role will provide training, technical assistance, project support, and consultation to pediatricians and other health professionals regarding the operationalization and promotion of ECHO within identified states/centers nationally and globally; collaborate with appropriate staff and faculty on the development of the AAP ECHO curriculum and educational products on assigned initiatives; and oversee assigned budgets, staff, subcontractors, and consultants. Represent the AAP in a liaison capacity with external organizations and federal agencies.
Some tasks include:
1. Direct and lead strategic planning efforts for the AAP Project ECHO Superhub, such as training, development, coordination, and implementation of all program activities; chapter involvement; site recruitment; meeting planning; report writing, and including administration, budgeting, planning, monitoring, evaluation, and program development. Maintain spreadsheet to track program activities.
2. Direct, lead, and manage all relevant grant and cooperative agreement activities specific to ECHO, including development and implementation of scope(s) of work and related deliverables, developing and managing budgets, ensuring financial and progress reporting requirements are adhered to, and negotiating with funders on completion of project deliverables and budget issues.
3. Direct strategic alignment with federal agencies and other organizations using an established technical assistance specific to ECHO and telementoring.
4. Identify funding sources to expand AAP ECHO, in collaboration with Development staff as appropriate. Develop and/or assist with proposals and grants as needed to secure funding.
5. Collaborate with AAP staff and other stakeholders to identify how ECHO can be used in pediatric public health models and integrated into AAP programs.
6. Direct and manage assigned operating and grant budgets and processing of expenditures and work with the AAP Finance staff to prepare required federal reports.
7. Direct and support activities to advance program objectives and deliverables to ensure that grant requirements are being met and adhere to federal regulations, including developing and executing sub-awards, financial and progress reports.
8. Respond to inquiries and correspondence from program collaborators, AAP fellows and other physicians, allied health professionals, governmental agencies, higher education institutions, and other organizations regarding program activities.
9. Advise, consult, and guide AAP staff and national and global partners on ECHO programs to ensure optimal consistency, efficiency, and viability of the program.
10. Represent the AAP at meetings with federal project officers, foundations, and other external partners and develop reports for AAP leadership and external partners/funders as needed.
11. Supervise assigned staff. Encourage a work environment that promotes inclusion and belonging of all staff. Support ongoing staff development, help set objectives, and evaluate performance, and promote and enhance staff capacity in skills necessary to achieve goals. Ensure staff operate in a fiscally prudent manner, maintain confidentiality, operate with the highest ethical standards, and provide excellent service to members and volunteers.
12. Oversee work of program consultants and subcontractors, including licensing agreements/contracts, review of products/materials, and management of expenditures.
13. Participate in AAP cross-functional teams related to AAP ECHO programs.
14. Lead the national and international AAP Project ECHOs and guide national organizations, institutions, and chapters as they become pediatric hubs.
15. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications needed:
1. Bachelor’s degree in public health, health administration, public administration, health policy, education or related field required. Master’s degree preferred. PMP, Agile or LEAN certification is desirable.
2. At least six years’ related experience in managing complex projects and project teams required, including budget management; grant proposal development, management, and implementation; fiscal oversight of operational and grant/external funding sources; serving as a liaison between various constituents; and supervising staff; preferably in a medical association, state public health agency, or national advocacy organization. Advanced project management skills and experience are required.
3. Excellent critical thinking, organizational, interpersonal, negotiation, diplomacy, leadership, and verbal/written communication skills required. Advanced project management skills essential, with the ability to coordinate efforts among multiple partners. Strong technical acumen essential with proficiency in MS Office and database management and the ability to learn and apply new technologies to advance work activities; knowledge of document collaboration platforms (eg, SharePoint), virtual meeting platforms (eg, WebEx, Teams, Zoom), and budgeting software (eg, Acumatica) preferred. Must be able to handle a heavy workload, manage multiple projects simultaneously, work both independently and as part of a team, take initiative, think strategically, collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituents, and promote and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment, with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Some travel and evening/weekend work required, as well as the need for flexibility in accommodating physicians’ availability.
Hybrid working arrangement of 40% on-site at our Chicago suburb headquarters in Itasca, IL.
