Total Rewards Director



Our People + Culture team is actively seeking a dynamic individual to fill the role of Total Rewards Director. As the inaugural appointee to this pivotal position, you will wield significant influence in shaping and executing VHB's comprehensive compensation and benefits strategies. Your responsibilities will span the entire lifecycle of these programs, from design to seamless implementation and efficient administration. As a key strategic partner, you will foster collaboration across the organization, ensuring a harmonious alignment of business priorities with overarching organizational goals.   • Formulating a comprehensive Total Rewards strategy in sync with VHB's goals and industry benchmarks.
  • Designing, implementing, and communicating compensation & benefits programs.
  • Directing initiatives like the annual compensation cycle, creating efficient processes, and ensuring equity.
  • Developing performance-based incentive programs.
  • Leading all aspects of compensation including merit, incentives, pay equity, and salary structure.
  • Overseeing market pricing activity and competitive pay positions.
  • Administering a best-in-class employee benefits program including health insurance, retirement plans, and wellness initiatives.
  • Overseeing operations of the Total Rewards team and offering advisory services to HR Partners and other leaders.
  • Endorsing collaborative relations with leaders to understand the firm's challenges related to the Total Rewards programs.
  • Managing a team of Compensation and Benefit Specialists with supervisory responsibilities.
  • Validating the effectiveness of Employee Benefit programs.
  • Participating in vendor, broker, and administrative partner selection.
  • Leading special projects including research, planning, implementation, and policy drafting.
  • Closely collaborating with the Vice President of HR and Finance for budget forecasting related to Total Rewards programs.
  • Keeping up with compensation, benefits, and compliance industry trends.
  • Complying with all local, state, and federal employment-related regulations.

Skills and Attributes

  • Working knowledge and understanding of HR and compensation systems and platforms (e.g., UltiPro/UKG, BenefitsPrime, Payscale).
  • Ability to work with flexibility, efficiency, diplomacy, confidentiality, tact, and discretion.
  • Ability to conduct research; organize and analyze data; formulate recommendations; and create and promote programs. Strong business acumen with ability to drive strategic direction. Expert in leveraging talent.
  • Thorough knowledge of local, state, and federal employment-related laws and regulations; in-depth knowledge of related laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, including state and federal regulations surrounding FMLA, HIPAA, PPACA (ACA), ERISA, and IRS regulations.
  • Excellent skills in project management and collaborative problem solving with employees and management.


  • 10+ years of experience in compensation and benefits
  • 15+ years of applicable experience including HR management
  • AEC industry a plus but not required
  • BA/BS in Business Administration, Human Resource Management, or related discipline

This opportunity is hybrid with 3 days in the office and travel will be as needed. Our location preference for this position is Watertown, Boston, Raleigh, Atlanta, or Orlando.
