Too many students of all ages struggle with math. I have discovered that math is the foundation for success in many professions. We need to all do our part to help students to succeed in math course. What are your tips for students who are enrolled in algebra and calculus classes? Do I have your permission to share your tips with students? Your tips can make a difference.

I can't offer any tips for the students per se, except if they need extra help, please don't wait to the last minute to get it. Let is be known very early that they need the help. As to how to help our students with this issue. I believe the schools need to understand the everyone processes math differently. Ex. some students need to have a problem broken down and shown all of the steps for their brains to understand the formulas. Then you have some students that don't need to see all the steps and can still get the answer. When they are paired with teachers that process math in the same way, I feel we will have greater success. Because of these different learning styles, a student that need to see every step in a class with a teacher that teaches without showing all steps will continue to have problems learning, understanding and will get frustrated. It also can frustrate students that don't need to see all steps to understand because they may feel the class is moving too slow for them. Just my thoughts from my own personal experience. I need to see all the steps, I was in a class with a professor that did not show all and I could not seem to pass a test above a D or C. When i changed professors to one that taught in the style of which I learned math. All I received was A's in the course. Just some food for thought.

I'm happy your daughter concurred it in by the 5th grade Mr. Clark. I did not have the issue during my preschool- high school yrs. I was a straight A student the entire time, it was not until I had this math at the college level that I noticed something just was not right considering my past academic performance. I'm just happy that I was able to notice what the issue was and made the professor change early.

algebra, calculus, physics and chemistry end up becoming intertwined in higher learning---
When I was going to college we were fortunate to care about highschoolers and we set up Saturday morning free volunteer classes for tutoring. I suggest looking into a university near the student that offers highschool students tutoring and mentoring on weekend classes.-----yes, use it the youngsters see math, science, premed students older than they are that are bright, hardworking and dedicated.

Hello to all,
The children of Black Americans have lost confidence and will continue to lose trust and confidence in the elders. Our children innately see that nothing their elders have done has yielded the rewards that these children want.
These children want to be sovereign free. They want to have their own. They want to produce on their own for themselves. They want a portion of this continent that they could call be very own country with borders. They want to be recognized.
You must fortify their desire to be sovereign or have complete independence on a portion of this continent that they could call it a very own country with borders.
Our children know that White America has a different attitude towards them then Asian or foreign children. These children know their elders are ignorant.
Every single one of you knows that I am telling the truth.

Practical application is what often worked for me. I loved math. I think what made that happen for me was that I was always able to apply it either through building things or decontructing. I figured that out very early on, but in algebra 1 I had a teacher who actally also took that approach to teaching and solidified it. Students who are having trouble tend to loose confidence. Once they are engaged in something that gets their mind off the numbers they focus better and excel in performance. People learn better when they are having fun. It works in math and science, and as a therapist I used that a lot with clients.

Stephen, As someone who is themself Math 'brain dead'...I will give them the best advice I was given when I was about to give up...One of my instructers in the Learning Disability center on my college campus reminded me that Einstein could not do simple math...this has always remained with me to keep on trying.(smile)

One of my friends sent her granddaughter a book last christmas on how to help make math fun. I will get the name of it from her and put it on this post.A lot of my problem with algebra in college was total panic of the written words formulars and as far as statistics the only way I was able to graduate from my University after community college was they saw i had taken it sooooooo many times, they went by my almost pervect GPA and just "forgave" this as passing statistic was a requirement in my African and African-American study major.
