David and Sean Goldman from New Jersey have finally been reunited in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and have landed safely in Orlando, Florida. I have closely monitored this case since the story first aired on Dateline NBC in January. Their story is very similar to my own personal story.
Just like David, I'm also a father from New Jersey, who had to battle the legal court system for years just to try and have a relationship with his own biological son. My story is another David vs. Goliath epic battle. My ex-wife used and abused the court system against me to an unfair advantage in order to keep me away from my son. I have never understood the reason why. I'm a college educated and professional businessman with a sterling reputation. I'm also a good human being. More importantly, I'm a good father and a great role model who wanted to be a part of my young son's life.
I also endured several disappointments and visitation court orders that were blatantly ignored and violated with absolutely NO consequences given to her. I commend and congratulate David Goldman for making his story public and getting the media involved. We both had the perseverance and tenacity to never ever give up! I hope other fathers will be encouraged and motivated by both of our stories to fight for their children. I have also spent a ton of money on exorbitant and unnecessary attorney's fees and airline tickets. The money would have been much better spent on my son's future college education.
Keep in mind all the while I was forced to pay my ex-wife over $360 a week for child support by a system that knew I was being over charged. The presiding Judge refused to lower it even after I proved that the calculations were way out of line. The $1,442 per month was garnished right out of my paychecks from work.
Too many fathers have thrown up their hands in utter disgust and walked away from their children because of an unfavorable legal court system. Some fathers walk away before the children are even born. Millions of children go to bed every night not knowing where their biological fathers are.
Tomorrow, David and Sean Goldman will spend their first Christmas together as a father and son since winning their custody battle in a court of law.
