As we continue to look at the festering sore of school dropout rates in the US, we turn our sights on the who and where of the statistics. WHO are the kids most likely to drop out of high school before graduation? WHERE are the hotspots of dropouts in the US?
According to the Alliance for Education –
WHO is Dropping Out of High School?
• 71% of students across the United States graduate with a regular and timely diploma. Therefore, 29% of students do not graduate on time.
• An average of 1.2 million kids every year fail to graduate high school.
• Among minority groups, 50% of high school students dropout.
• Higher-income families are more than 7 times as likely to have all their children graduate from high school than lower-income families.
WHERE are High School Dropouts Happening?
• There is a chronic and small percentage of schools that are responsible for more than 50% of all the nations’ high school dropouts. In these 2000 schools, known as dropout factories by education experts, chronically account for half of American dropouts.
• 80% of the dropout factories can be found in 15 states.
• Southern states, Northern and Western cities produce the most dropouts.
It’s incredible to believe that this year, there will be another 1.2 million people attempting to enter the workforce throughout the US without a high school diploma, and no hope of a college degree.
We are systematically allowing these statistics to build a future without benefit of a high school or college degree. It not only offers our kids a lower chance of success in life, but it lowers the standards of the economic goals for the country as well.
