my name is Dr. Carl Reece. Welcome to another presentation and thanks for joining me. Most schools are now back in session and many students have entered a new grade presenting a new set of topics. Unfortunately, some have been retained in their former grade because of unsatisfactory performance on the Annual Grade Level Test. Let’s hope this new school year will bring about the desired changes to see all our students achieve at the highest levels of their capabilities. Count on us to assist in whatever way we can. Many countries are including educational games as a part of boosting the learning experiences of their students. Students are rewarded as a part of motivation them to perform at the highest levels of their capabilities. Today marks the official launching of the ‘Family Challenge’ in the form of the game: ‘THE AMERICAN MATH WIZ KID.’ Thanks to some great sponsors we will be able to award more than $30,000 in prizes; the main prize being a $25,000.00 cash scholarship to the winner. To be eligible to participate intended participants must be a member of ‘CLUB ESTEEM.’ … Membership registration and benefits of the club can be accessed on our web site as displayed in our profile. Today we will explore a topic that continues to present a challenge to many students. We will look at the concepts and the application of the concepts as applied in the solution steps for one specific problem. You are advised to find similar problems and practice until you feel confident that you have mastered the application of the concepts. It is said that practice becomes perfect. I say: “Practice becomes permanent.” __________ DISCLAIMER --------------- The information presented here is for educational and informational purposes only. The oceans with miles of open body of water is among the largest breeding grounds for many different types of animals eaten by man. It is estimated that more than twenty-five million tons of these animals are extracted from the oceans as food each year. Express twenty-five million in scientific notation. SCIENTIFIC NOTATION – The Concept Scientific Notation is a system of writing very large or very small numbers. A number in scientific notation is written as a number between 1 and 10, multiplied by a number 10 with an exponent. (The exponent is a symbol written above and to the right of a mathematical expression to indicate the operation of raising to a power. The ‘3’ in 5³ is called the exponent). In scientific notation, there are always two numbers that multiply each other: The first number is always a number between 1 and 10. The second number is always the number 10 with an exponent. EXAMPLE 654 = (6 × 100) + (5 × 10) + (4 × 1) … (Expanded Form) = (6 × 10²) + (5 × 10¹) + (4 × 10º) … (Expanded Form using exponents) Therefore, 654 = 6.54 × 10² NOTE (i): When the exponent is positive, the number of zeros after the 1 is the same as the exponent. Example, the number 10² contains 2 zeros: = 100. NOTE (ii): When the exponent is negative, the number of zeros after the decimal point is one (1) less than the number for the exponent. Example, the number 10‾² contains 1 zeros after the decimal point: = 0.01 APPLICATION STEPS STEP 1. Convert twenty-five million from word form to standard notation: Use numerals to represent the words: Twenty-five million = 25,000,000 STEP 2. Write 25,000,000 in scientific notation: Scientific notation is often used to abbreviate very large or very small numbers. There are always two factors that multiply each other. The first is a number greater than or equal to 1, and less than10. The second is 10 with an exponent. To complete the conversion: (i) Place a period (dot) after the first digit: The first factor is always a number between 1 and 10. 25,000,000 → 2.5,000,000 The first factor becomes 2.5 (ii) Count the number of digits to the right of the dot. The second number is always the number 10 with an exponent. There are 7 digits after the dot. (iii) Write the exponent of 10: The exponent of 10 is the number of places after the dot. Since there were 7 places, the exponent is 7. = 10 to the seventh power The second factor becomes 10 with the exponent 7. (iv) Write the two factors together: The first factor = 2.5 The second factor = 10 with exponent 7 Therefore, 25,000,000 = 2 .5 × 10 with exponent 7 Well, that’s all for today. There are hundreds of topics included in the different Strands to be studied. All topics are comprehensively dealt with in our web presentation. Further clarifications on any topic of concern, from Kindergarten through High school, Teacher Certification and College level test prep can be found on our web site as is shown in my profile.
