Cost of living without a bank (629 hits)

The fees can be as high as $9.00 to cash a payroll check, $1.50 for a money order. A dollar or more everytime you swipe that prepaid cash card card adds up. Just think of all the money you could have saved but just opening up a bank account.
It can also be an issue of relationship. You can't establish any relationship with the corner cash check store but you can with a bank. Some banks requires a balance of $100.00 for a no fee account. At any rate it's a lot better having a bank account than to resort to using a check cashing place as your bank.

For the most part I have direct deposit for any funds I receive but the other day I had rec'd a check from my siter for my birthday. I went to the bank that it was drwan on to cash it. Well, I got a shocker, they wanted to pay $7.00 to cash a check drawn on their bank because I didn't have an account there. I said, thanks, but no thanks. I just went to my bank and did the transaction, no fee involved.

Sista you are so right. We must establish our credit properly. Can't do anything without a bank account. I have a banker who actually approached me at my booth, asked did I have an account or did I need to open for other members. Long story short, I've sent about 6 people to him who were able to open accounts. He's not doing anything illegal, because final approval is not his, but he opened the door. Some banks you go to, first thing out their mouth, you owe, credits to bad, we can't do open one at this time. We have to make these kinds of contacts to get ahead. Anyone in the Augusta area, need an account, its Wells Fargo/Wachovia, a good bank, email me, I will give you his name. Good post Sista Dorothy.

I want to stress the importance of using a black bank it al possible. Just like our black businesses, if we don't support them, who will. I currently use One United Bank as one of my banks.

My advice is we should pay close attention to if it is actually a B-A-N-K...today even lbig named Chases may not have the words BAnk on the name on their billings which means they are not federally insured/ banks as we use to know them before they went into the morage business. (smile)

HO, I learned this the hard way just before Chase brought our my what I thought was a Bank called WASHINGTON MUTUAL...IT DID NOT HAVE THE WORDS BANK ON IT WHEN THEY ABUSED MY HAVING ONE OF THEIR CREDIT CARDS AND MY DIRECT CHECKING DEPOSIT ACCOUNT IN THEIR MORAGE CO.!!!!!! (NUP)

...Oh, how after my having been dealing with Washington Mutual for so many years and, how I learned how to look for the words B-A-N-K on any place calling itself a bank...I live out in the country where we have a mail box and if there is a sub mail person you may or may not get your mail on time...and when this happens, some times we take each other's mail that don't belongs in our boxes to the correct neighbor or just send it back to the post office...this can cause one to miss a payment and because I guard my credit like a hawk...I had an agreement with my bank's credit card to get the payment directly out of my checking account each month...

one time they failed to do this and charged me a late fee...which being meto have to teach my bank (?) I am not going to back down when I am in teh right...which means I will not accept being punished by way of paying my bill LATE and then paying them for not paying their self which would have made me pay as I had been doing for years on time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was not easy but I did learn everything about me bank that had them ready and willing to agree with me...lol (smile)
