There are some of us and they are on this site, who do not seem to understand the value of celebrating Black History Month. I, for one, do not believe that we, as a people can truly progress if we do not know from where we've come. It has been my experience that when Black children know that we DID make a contribution to this country, and we have something to be proud of , they will see themelves differently and will understand that their role, is to contribute to the volumn of firsts, inventions and the legacy left for them.
It also lets them know that they need to investigate for themselves. When they recognize that they have been lied to, then they start to question and search for the truth. They need to know that their legacy is more that being a slave, bought and sold like hay. Even if they are descendents of slaves, that they are survivors, or they would not be here. Those others did not make the crossing.
The word HISTORY means that it is a story from the past so what else will we talk about, something that hasn't happened yet? If it hasn't happened yet, it does not exist. There is so much information that our children do not know and it is IMPORTANT for them to know it if knowing what the white man has decided that they should know is important. It is our place to teach them so how else will we do that?
Foundations are build one brick at a time. The information bank is filled one bit of information at a time. Viewing the wealth of information that the youth of today does not know, we should be horrified by the injustice the educational system has visited upon the young people of today of any color. It is just as inportant for all children regardless of race creed or color, to know the truth.
