It seems like the powers that be always find a way to mess up a good thing. Aspiring R&B crooner Jermaine Jones became the latest contestant to get axed from American Idol and the circumstances around his dismissal are pretty suspect.
As one of the 13 remaining finalists, the 6’8” “gentle giant” was nearing the final rounds of the contest when executive producers Ken Warwick and Nigel Lythgoe canned the Idol hopeful after finding out he concealed details about his criminal history, which includes five pending arrest warrants.
TMZ.com was the first website to break the story about the A.I. producers’ plans to sack Jones for his bout with convenient amnesia. While show producers have the right to boot Jones off the program after his unwillingness to be upfront, it is a bit of a coincidence how far into the show Jones was able to advance in the contest before being exposed. While his televised expulsion may come as a shock, Jones’ criminal background was surely available for producers to discover prior to auditions. It’s understandable not wanting to base the popular talent contest around a single candidate who has active warrants and can be arrested at any given time, but how convenient of the producers to let this information slip by them and then be thrust upon them to become fodder for the show. Hey, you know the old showbiz saying: there is no such thing as bad press.
Well aware of what he was set to face on last night’s show, Jones, who confirmed reports on the matter, Tweeted:
“Awww I will no longer b on the show.”
