I can remember a time when "Black" people were not very interested in politics. They became Republicans because that was the party that freed them and gave them the right to vote. Then, when the new day republicans disapointed them and Roosevelt came on like gang busters as the savior, they jumped ship and became Democrates even though it was the Democrates who made them slaves for life.. What went on in the "white" world was not of interest to them. The youth finally got political ie Black Nationalist, Black Panthers etc, and the scene changed. They still left out global politics. What they forgot was, with demands comes responsibility. Most voted a party ticket and waited for the hand-outs. What the subsiquent public forgot was to do their homework, and that is the problem today. Many do not realize that the give me programs and food stamps and section 8 is the new slavery-share cropping if you will. "I will give you just enough to keep you from starving but not enough to get on your feet. If you do anything for yourself, I will take back the gift".(help) After all, I am taking care of you ; you can't take care of yourself. The brainwashing then began to absorb the idea "I deserve this; they are helping me." They still can't wrap their brain around the idea, don't do for your self. Independents is a scarey idea to the power structure. If "Black Money" is turned a loose in America the the dynamics change. Why would I want my neighbor to acquire enough to desimate me?

is a form of "Say (your a brother, help me out) or (you are rich give me some. )now before you all blow a gasket. some black people may feel that way. But not all. Back when my mother was a girl There were black owned bussiness. banks,& food store, etc. Some blacks made there own money and did not need white money to live. Black politician of the day used there influence keep think even, But when some black became too powerful some white felt threatened. Now Slavery as my sister pointed out everything we do in society center around
slavery mentality. Next week is the nfl draft. where they pick player to play in the nfl
notice now there selected. Kids on the playground they pick kids for there kick ball game
When you apply for a job, notice how you are selected. This is the way world works you may not like it, but thats the it is.If independents is what you seek, then taking responsiditity for it is very importance.

The political party system has turned into a button pushing plaything. Just as you said, they are all the same, control. Americana has never, and I am taking a risk here, done anything for us that they did not reap the benefits. It has never been because it is the right thing to do.

There was a time when Blacks were really independent. Take Tulsa Oklahoma, and the Black wall street. money turned over 30 -40 times before it left the community. Take Boley, Oklahoma, an all Black town founded before statehood. In the middle of segregation, Blacks did not allow whites to buy property. There were banks, hotel, grocery stores, department stores, gas stations, post office, drug stores, funeral homes, reataurent, car dealership, broom factory, ice cream factory, private schools, Lawyers, Doctors, two hospital just to name a few. My Father was the judge and his best friend was the police chief. The railroad had a stop in boley and cotton that had been ginned in Boley's four cotton Gins was shipped from there.
When the railroad was moved and the depression hit, it was divestating to the community and that was the beginning of the end. so, to say that Black people couldn't be independent is not quite true. What we have to find out is where that independets went and why? Even under those circumstances, there were some Blacks, poor blacks, who believed the white mans goods were better that the Black man's goods. never mind the fact that the stuff came from the same truck.
Some more slave mentality---Where it went in my estimation, the Rosevelt program to get out of the depression that morfed into what is happening today. Don't do for yourself, i will do it for you but.... Some more slave thinking.

Thank for black history lesson You & your brother have a strong family background of black independence. My story of being born 1981 I,m very young in the world. I'm book smart not age smart I Understand what you are saying. I know that history is importance and. Until Black men quit killing each other and Black women quit putting down There Black Men . Black Independence is nothing but a Dream!!!!

I am a person who looks for answers anywhere and every where. A briliant minds like yours may just have an Idea of what went wrong and a suggestion on something to turn this thing around. One of the things that changed the respective for a group of young people I came into contact withm made some strides by learning that they had a heritage beyond slavery and that they had a responsibility to carry it on. In light of that, how did you develop your independence beyond money and can that be passed on to others in some form without you and I becoming the other group?

I was brought up in a educated house. A Family full of docters so education was my independence My twin Brother is smarter then I am (I think) he says (I'm smarter then he). So school is easy for me. I Love school
the power I have is fun. People talks to me , Doors are open. Becauce of education the world is mine.
The way I see it. I can't be STOP!

Anything that makes one feel "comfortable" (in or out of politics) while merely existing is not good. Life is for living, not merely existing. I salute those who break free of mental and economic shackles, erroneous beliefs, etc. and go after and fulfill their dreams and destiny. It takes courage to do that.

I am going to add my two cents to this discussion--and so far it is a thoughtful conversation full of honest and perceptive insights--in other words, a real conversation.
When you said:

Well, for the most part, I have to agree. However, there are some glaring exceptions that nobody should forget. There were moments when our government absolutely DID do the right thing.
1. President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and tells an aide: "We will lose the South (Then solidly Democratic) for a generation." He was more right than he knew.
2. 1954. Brown v. Bd. of Education Supreme Court decision overturns precedent set by Plessy v. Ferguson which was the legal foundation for Jim Crow "separate but equal."
3. 1957. President Eisenhower sent National Guard troops to Little Rock, Arkansas to protect the right of nine AFrican-American students to go to school. That established a precedent putting the FEderal Government behind the civil rights of its minority citizens.
My point: there are a few instances where government did serve and support the African-American community--and they are significant moments in our history.
But I agree--there should be more!!!

Rich,
I didn't mean to imply that the government never did anything for Black people. What I meant, Those things were not done out of the blue. Something gigantic had to happen to push them into action. The Assassination of the president, public opinion and foreigh policy, to name a few. I wiil be the first to say that strides have been made in the race relations area. What I meant was Some Blacks did not view the changes in the right frame of mind and out of that grew the "You owe me" attitude, entitlements Which has been a great stumbling block in the Black community.
Independence is scary to them too. I often wonder what happened between the time when Blacks did for themselves even if it meant working four jobs and the time when begging was okay. I remember the time when to accept handouts even if you were hungry, was a reflection on the parents inability to support their family. If a kid was at your house at dinner time he was suppose to say "No thank you" when invited to dinner and go home hungry.
I do not discount any of the accomplishment made in the US. And with all of its ills, I am an American and I intend to stay here. Thanks Rich, for your insight. Don't ever fail to pull my coat if it needs pulling.

That is why the voices crying for justice are so important! Like right now--Reverend Sharpton down in Florida focusing attention on the Trayvon Martin tragedy.
But sadly, you are too correct when you point out that change does not happen without agitation.

Yeah, it makes no sesne, right! But a florida law passed in 2005 and signed by then Gov Bush allows an individual to use deadly force (with any weapon at hand) to kill a person who they think is threatening them.
It is called the "Stand Youir Ground" law and it gives anyone the legal right to kill someone for very flimsy reasons.
The way the law is written, it ties the hands of the police--they are bound to assume that the killing is justified, especially if there is no contradictory evidence. If the only other witness to the crime is dead, there is nobody to contradict the statement of the killer.
That is the number one reason why this killer is free today. The town police conducted no investigation because they believed his story.
Why was he license to have a gun? Even though he was arrested for assaulting a police officer? I do not know. In Florida, as in many states, they have lenient gun laws.
You can see the craziness of this.
But the guy is now a marked man. The feds will nail him. The prosecuter will conduct a proper investigation and already there is enough evidence out there to undermine his claim of self-defense.
His days as a free man are numbered.

The laws are to help people and to keep order, Not turn a person into a one man street gang!
Law makers should think about what laws are fair & right before they pass them.
I have a younger brother & sister they are just starting their lives. My Mom is worried about them as
they get ready to go out into the world. The death of Trayvon Martin is a strong reminder, On how
dangerous this world is..

Good point, Kenya...
Sometimes, lawmakers pass laws without thinking about the consequences or the unintended consequences. Back in 2005, opponents of this law predicted exactly this kind of scenario. It was a murder waiting to happen.
Lawmakers make laws they think will satisfy their voters. EXAMPLE: In Virginia, Arizona, Utah and other states--before a woman can receive a Constitutionaliilly guaranteed abortion from her doctor, she is mandated by law to undergo un ultrasound procedure--and since her insurance company is not paying for it, she has to foot the bill.
Why would they pass such a burdensome law? Because they feel their supporters will reward them with their votes.
That is why the ballot box is so important in a democracy. The people in power who make the laws are our own reporesentatives...and if we don't like the laws we need to vote the lawmekrs out and replace them!!!

Did you see a blog I posted here about a week ago about an Ohio State Senatorwho proposed a new law requiring men to present an affidavit from a potential s*xual partner testifying to the man's impotence BEFORE he is allowed to obtain Viagra? She says she is serious...but everybody got her point.

@Kenya...like anything else, things depend ont eh first law of nature which is to survive. NOw if one takes what they learn and not try to see bothe sides of the issue (using many different resources) with the attitude taht any thing about it you don't like or has disagreed with before hand then you will always remain in yourown private world with your own truths thus not allowing even common sense into the mix. Me, "I" chose to ake common sense over formal education any day.
As far as the education on Black history our history is no different than any other history of th ehuman race learning by trial and error how to survive along how to change with our enviornment and again tis is all related to the first naturl law fo rsurvival which goes above and beyond recorded history. example as an African o-American my history predates even the nation called America and also like life itself is progressing with every moment....
but personally I believe taht all peoples, cultures, personal beliefs, desires and religions. ect. are more alike than different.(smile)
