Mathematics: We consider math a conceptual language and know that it’s important to ensure mastery of this discipline as it lays the foundation for science, economics and other important subjects. Without a good grasp of mathematics, higher education and many professions will be out of reach.
Oral & Written Communication: Language is power! It is clear that an ability to communicate orally and in writing is crucial to being able to be successful in today’s society. Black boys are verbal and often vocal among friends, but are unable to express themselves in the wider societal dialogue. For black men to assert themselves in discourse in society, oral and written communication is key – and without this only lower paying jobs (or unemployment) will be available.
Health & Fitness: Being healthy, alert and fit is core to living a happy and fulfilling life. Obesity, substance abuse and many other ailments afflict black men – preparing boys to prevent many of these health problems is a clear aim for M³’s strong focus on healthy eating, sports and exercise. Creating habits in this area will enable our boys to live fulfilling lives.
Life Skills (networking, discipline, etc.): As most who have experienced successful careers know, having good schooling is only the entrance into academia and working life. A number of other disciplines are central to success, such as time management, networking, keeping commitments. M³ endeavors to enlighten the importance of, and teach these skills to the students.
Participate in assisting M³ in ensuring that the above disciplines are learned – substance abuse, incarceration and unemployment will be the future for a large group of our black young men unless a significant change is achieved soon.
