Rev. Run's rapper son is not lacking in confidence. On the song "Unforgivable Blackness" off his debut album, Unexpected Arrival, Diggy Simmons calls himself one of the last real MCs. In an interview with Hip Hop DX he explains what he meant by the line "The Real MCs, I'm the last of it."
"I mean, I personally just think I am," he said frankly. "Lyrically, my content, subject matter, just everything that I’m about makes me feel that I am. And it’s not coming from a cocky place or anything; it’s just the way that I feel about myself. And I feel like that’s how everybody should be: not look for approval from others to feel as though they can be or do whatever it is that they want to do. You have to have that belief in yourself before the rest of the world is gonna have it. So I feel as though I’m an emcee and I just wanna give hip hop something to be proud of."
A couple years ago, when Diggy first talked about entering the rap game, he spoke of raising the standards for the genre.
"I'm just trying to be hip hop in general, you know," he said. "Break boundaries, just really do it all…I'm really trying to push the bar with hip hop and keep going with it."
