CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- David Axelrod, a senior campaign adviser for President Barack Obama's reelection campaign, trash-talked Mitt Romney on Sunday, calling last week's Republican National Convention "a terrible failure" and claiming Romney did not receive a polling bounce.
Asked by Chris Wallace of "Fox News Sunday" whether most Americans can say they're better off now than they were four years ago, Axelrod argued that "we are in a better position" now because the economy is no longer bleeding 800,000 jobs a month.
"The problem is Governor Romney never offered a plausible alternative," said Axelrod. "He spoke 45 minutes and never offered ideas of how to move the economy forward and lift the middle class. His convention was a terrible failure."
Axelrod continued, "He never talked about the principal planks of his own plan. He never talked about the $5 trillion tax cut skewed to the wealthy and ... about putting Medicare in a voucher program."
Wallace pointed out that some polls showed Romney receiving a bounce from the Republican convention. Axelrod said no.
"I saw no movement, and I don't think there would have been," he said, "because people are looking for answers and looking for solutions, and what they got was snarky attacks and bromides for the base. And people walked away unsatisfied from the convention. The race is where it was before they walked in, and now it is our turn."
