KNICKS TYSON CHANDLER AND HIS WIFE KIMBERLY COME TO THE AID OF THE PEOPLE IN DEVASTATED ROCKAWAY, QUEENS (3223 hits)

HUFFINGTON POST, December 3, 2012 -- While much of the East Coast has recovered from Hurricane Sandy's wrath, the residents of New York’s Rockaways, a land strip nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay, are still struggling to pick up the pieces.

New York Knicks Tyson Chandler, who launched a recovery effort called "Rebound 4 Rockaway/Rebound for New York" with his wife Kimberly last month, can attest to the area's lingering devastation.

"I don't think people understand the devastation that's still happening ... weeks after Hurricane Sandy," Kimberly said in a video of the couple's most recent trip to the peninsula. "They need more hands, they need more monetary funds, they need more contributions than I think people actually realize because there's not a lot of public attention being brought here."

Chandler and her husband have been organizing events around Christmas for years. Following the storm, however, which reportedly displaced some 100,000 people and led to more than 8 million power outages, Chandler says they needed to rethink how they helped the less fortunate this year. "Suddenly, the idea of distributing turkeys to places that didn’t even have power no longer made sense,” Kimberly told Vogue.com.

The Chandlers' relief effort, a partnership with Action Center and Hillsong NYC church, has aimed to collect funds through the NBA star's website,Tysonchandler.com, along with items such as baby supplies and clothing for what Hillsong volunteer Joe Termini says is a population that was already starting from behind. "Most of these people in and around the area are 200 percent below the poverty line," he notes.

Last week, WABC's Jim Hoffer reported that mold could pose significant health risks for those still living in unheated homes in the Rockaways, reaffirming Chandler's observation that what's happening in the Rockaways is not a quick fix.

"This is something that's going to be ongoing, God knows for how long," Kimberly Chandler said. "We just hope that people will continue to come and support the community and help to rebuild it."

THIS IS GOOD RICH ,we need mor people like this to give and support the needy ,,what I like most about this, is the foundation is the church opening there doors to the people to allow them to use it as a base of operation,a outlet to the public ,,,this is the role i believe the church should play all the time not just when devastation hits ,there is a need that needs to be met and a responsibility to the people that should come from the church !,,my thoughts !

Exactly! And the interesting thing about Tyson Chandler is...that is how he plays the game of basketball. He is unselfish and team oriented. That is how he became Defensive player of the year. Definitely a class act. Love to see him and his wife working together to help the people in QUEENS, NY!!!

Thanks for your kind wishes for us out here on Staten Island. President Obama was here a couple of weeks ago and he provided a HUGE emotional boost. Please keep all of us in your prayers and thoughts.

SAint--thanks for asking. We are in the middle of the island on high ground. WE just lost lots of tree branches--it took three days to clean up. And like everyone else in NYC we lost electricity for a couple of days. I know you are downtown--and if you live near one of the rivers it could have been devastating as well.

You heard about that parking garage attendant downtown who took refuge in a car in the underground parking lot and drowned? Tragic!

Hey Charmell--
Great to hear from you. I agree--this piece should be spread around. Big Time athletes are sometimes regarded as spoiled brats. You know the headlines. So when a class act comes along who actually cares about the community, that is something to celebrate.

Please--go ahead and post this to FB. I did that already and it got some play from KNick fans who LOVE Tyson Chandler.

So after I read your comment where you spoke about your great memories of Rockaway and Beach Channell Drive...I used to live in Queens for about a dozen years. Went to Rockaway Beach every summer, over the bridge onto Beach Channell Drive. So I have some great memories too.

Yeah, it is sad. Devastating.
