Gullah History (3286 hits)

The Gullah are African Americans who live in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina and Georgia, which includes both the coastal plain and the Beaufort Sea Islands.

The Gullah are known for preserving more of their African linguistic and cultural heritage than any other African-American community in the United States. They speak an English-based creole language containing many African loanwords and significant influences from African languages in grammar and sentence structure; Gullah storytelling, cuisine, music, folk beliefs, crafts, farming and fishing traditions, all exhibit strong influences from West and Central African cultures.

Gullah language
Gullah (also called Sea Island Creole English and Geechee) is a creole language spoken by the Gullah people (also called "Geechees" within the community), an African American population living on the Sea Islands and the coastal region of the U.S. states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and northeast Florida.
The Gullah language is based on English, with strong influences from West and Central African languages such as Mandinka, Wolof, Bambara, Fula, Mende, Vai, Akan, Ewe, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Kongo, Umbundu and Kimbundu.

The Gullah are a distinctive group of Black Americans from South Carolina and Georgia in the southeastern United States. They live in small farming and fishing communities along the Atlantic coastal plain and on the chain of Sea Islands which runs parallel to the coast. Because of their geographical isolation and strong community life, the Gullah have been able to preserve more of their African cultural heritage than any other group of Black Americans. They speak a creole language similar to Sierra Leone Krio, use African names, tell African folktales, make African-style handicrafts such as baskets and carved walking sticks, and enjoy a rich cuisine based primarily on rice.

The first English-speaking settlement in South Carolina was established on the coast in 1670. For the first thirty years the colonists had little success, but by about 1700 they discovered that rice, imported from Asia, grew well in the inland valley swamps of the Low Country. Throughout the 1700s the economy of South Carolina was based overwhelmingly on the cultivation of rice. This product brought consistently high prices in England, and the colony prospered and expanded. Rice agriculture has been called "the best opportunity for industrial profit which 18th century America afforded." South Carolina became one of the richest of the North American Colonies; and Charlestown (now Charleston), its capital and principal port, one of the wealthiest and most fashionable cities in early America. Later, because of the extraordinary success in South Carolina, the rice plantation system was extended farther south into coastal Georgia, where it also prospered.

The South Carolina planters were, at first, completely ignorant of rice cultivation, and their early experiments with this specialized type of tropical agriculture were mostly failures. They soon recognized the advantage of importing slaves from the traditional rice-growing region of West Africa, and they generally showed far greater interest in the geographical origins of African slaves than did planters in other North American colonies. The South Carolina rice planters were willing to pay higher prices for slaves from the "Rice Coast," the "Windward Coast," the "Gambia," and "Sierra-Leon"; and slave traders in Africa soon learned that South Carolina was an especially profitable market for slaves from those areas. When slave traders arrived in Charlestown with slaves from the rice-growing region, they were careful to advertise their origin on auction posters or in newspaper announcements, sometimes noting that the slaves were "accustomed to the planting of rice." Traders who arrived in Charlestown with slaves from other parts of Africa where rice was not traditionally grown, such as Nigeria, often found that their slaves fetched lower prices. In some cases, they could sell no slaves at all and had to sail away to another port.

because of the white slaveholders feared the swamp areas due to the mosquitoes and illness; most of the slaves were left alone in these rice growing areas... which allowed the enslaved men and women to work via task-system. Needless to say because of the absence of whites in the area.. The Gullah people were privilaged to maintain most of their cultural teachings....

The Charleston is a dance named for the harbor city of Charleston, South Carolina. The rhythm was popularized in mainstream dance music in the United States by a 1923 tune called "The Charleston" by composer/pianist James P. Johnson which originated in the Broadway show Runnin' Wild[1] and became one of the most popular hits of the decade. Runnin' Wild ran from 29 October 1923 through 28 June 1924.[1] The peak year for the Charleston as a dance by the public was mid 1926 to 1927.

The Charleston is celebrated on this date. This is a dance style influenced by African culture and started durinhg Bblack slavery in America.

Some historians assert that the "Ash-Ante Peoples" of Africa were the originators of the dance, with it being carried on and modified by slaves against the enforced rules of their masters. There are also descriptions and pictures of a dance in the Harper's Weekly Magazine, 1866, that is very similar to the Charleston. More specifically, Blacks living on a small island near Charleston, South Carolina, originated the steps. The Charleston was performed as early as 1903, and evolved into Harlem stage productions by 1913. Even so, the Charleston dance established itself (worldwide) during the Ragtime-Jazz period.

In 1922, it was brought to show business and went public at the New Amsterdam Theater in New York when a "Ziegfeld Follies" production featured the Charleston. Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake introduced a young Black boy to Ned Wayburn. The boy demonstrated what was to be the signature step of the Charleston. Wayburn (supposedly) choreographed a few more steps and Sissle and Blake wrote the songs. It was an immediate hit. In the same year, a stage play by the name of "Liza" introduced the dance. Again on October 29, 1923, in the Flournoy Miller and Aubrey Lyles Broadway show "Runnin' Wild," Edith Mae Barnes claimed it was she who introduced the dance in that musical.

During the 1920s, women that did the Charleston were called "Flappers" because of the way they would flap their arms and walk like birds while dancing. Many men wore raccoon coats and straw hats. Not everyone had good luck with the Charleston. Some jobs of the day required employees to be competent to dance or teach the Charleston in order to get work such as waiters and waitresses. Others saw the Charleston and flappers as the downfall to many moral issues of the day.

In 1925, Variety Magazine reported that in Boston, the vibrations of Charleston dancers were so strong that the dancers caused the "Pickwick Club" (a tenderloin dance hall) to collapse, killing 50.

Cultural survival
Gullah culture has proven to be particularly resilient. Gullah traditions are strong not only in the rural areas of the Lowcountry mainland and on the Sea Islands, but also in urban areas like Charleston and Savannah. But some of the old fashioned ways have persisted even among Gullah people who have left the Lowcountry and moved far away. Many Gullahs migrated to New York starting at the beginning of the 20th century, and these urban migrants have not lost their identity. Gullahs have their own neighborhood churches in Harlem, Brooklyn, and Queens. Typically they send their children back to rural communities in South Carolina and Georgia during the summer months to be reared by grandparents, uncles and aunts. Gullah people living in New York also frequently return to the Lowcountry to retire. Second- and third-generation Gullahs in New York often maintain many of their traditional customs and sometimes still speak the Gullah language.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gullah

David,

Okay, you say the Gullah people is part of your history. The Gullah were pure Africans brought to White America and placed on these remote island to grow rice and that Whites did not interbreed with them because of the fear of the malaria disease.

So, please explain how the Gullah people are a part of your history. In other words, the Gullah people are Africans and you are not an African, so please explain.

I visited them last year in Beaufort, S.C. It is just in recent years that they have intermingled with the mainland Black American people.

Irma,

I found something from the other history.

"Gullah/Geechee people have always considered ourselves as one. Amongst ourselves, we don’t use designations of ‘Gullah,’ or ‘Geechee.’ We know we are all kin. We know we’re all the same culture, heritage, and legacy.” (Interview with Marquetta L. Goodwine, Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (7-6-02) on St. Helena Island, SC)"

Gullah youth, though not necessarily conversant in the language, show a curious interest in this unique form of communication. Gullah language was originally perceived by mainlanders as a form of ‘broken English.” Gullah/Geechee people were forbidden to use the language in public settings, the implication being Gullah language was, in fact, not a language. Lorenzo Turner (1949) challenged this very Anglo-centric viewpoint, changing the thinking not only about the speech of Gullah/Geechee people, but also about the general linguistic heritage of African-Americans. The experiences of Gullah/Geechee people, who have had to defend the mere use of their language, may be interpreted from specific statements cited below (Interviews 2001-2002):

“We lead a double life. We have the language of Gullah and the language of English.”

“ For years we were told that our language is broken. A generation of people were told, ‘you’ll never get through life talking like that.’ So, anybody living in town would say, ‘I’m not Gullah; I’m not from the island.’ “

“ During the days of slavery, we got whipped for speaking Gullah. When we went to school, we got disciplined for speaking Gullah. As adults, we were made fun of for speaking Gullah. Now you come and study us because we speak Gullah. What’s a Gullah to think?”

“A lot of young people are taking a new interest in the Gullah language. It is important for young people to have pride in their language and culture”

“Our culture must be passed along to younger generations...Gullah language is an oral history of Gullah culture and the younger generation must never lose touch with the language. Ignorance of the language and culture is our greatest threat.”

Religion Religious Practices of the Gullah/Geechee People The distinctive religious practices of the Gullah-Geechee communities contain influences from several cultures, much like the other aspects of their culture. The three main influences on the development of Gullah-Geechee religion were: Christianity, Islam, and traditional West African practices. This section will examine how these three influences coexisted in the Lowcountry and eventually fused to create the unique belief system of the Gullah-Geechee peoples. Christianity and the Gullah/Geechee People Many evangelical Christian preachers, black and white, openly opposed the institution of slavery. An ideal of millenarianism developed which proclaimed slaveholding was a sin and like all sins would eventually be punished by the Christian God. This idea of a vengeful god appealed to the enslaved people of the Lowcountry because it offered them hope of obtaining freedom and seeing their oppressors punished. Enslaved persons used this message of millenarianism for their own understanding of the Bible, especially the Old Testament. They often compared their oppression with the story of the Israelites who were in bondage under the King of Egypt for four hundred years. As the story goes, one day, after four hundred years, the God of the Israelites sent Moses to tell the King of Egypt to release the Israelites from bondage. After the King refused several times, the God of the Israelites sent many plagues which nearly destroyed Egypt. This story clearly explains why the slaves never lost hope in a "Savior" to rescue them. Christianity of the Lowcountry among the Gullah p Baptismal Group GHS Photograph Collection MS 1360-05-14-01 eople was slightly different from churches outside the community. They were primarily under the auspices of Baptist or Methodist. Since the 1700s, slaves in the Lowcountry were attracted to "Evangelical Protestantism." Evangelical Protestantism includes Calvinist Methodist, Arminian Methodist or Baptist (which includes Arminians and Calvinists). This branch of Christianity promoted equality between blacks and whites inspiring both to achieve the "born-again" experience. In addition, Baptists and Methodists promoted literacy and education for all believers, including slaves. They believed literacy was central in gaining a better understanding of God through the Bible. Methodists and Baptists also encourage emotional expression of faith. Today, the descendants of the Gullah, continue to have a spiritual life that influences every aspect of their lives. They believed in the dual nature of the soul and spirit. In death, one's soul returns to God but the spirit remains on earth living among the individual's descendants. It was common for funerals to be ornate and for mourners to decorate graves using items that belonged to the newly deceased. The Gullah believed the spirit of their ancestors participated in their daily affairs such as protecting them and guiding them through spiritual forces.

Religious Beliefs

Gullah/Geechee people have a deep sense of spiritual connection to Almighty God. Gullah “spiritual life” operates as a central ethos and foundation for the culture.Gullah/Geechee people are guided by spiritual powers, beliefs, and personal values not easily discounted. Religious beliefs and teachings guide the Gullah sense of justice, equity, kinship, social awareness, and community relations. Religion provides the Gullah with a basic philosophy from which life becomes directed, a ‘divine order.’ Gullah tradition and cultural heritage rest on a foundation of ‘spiritual belief.’ Activities in the life of Gullah/Geechee people, from town meetings to sporting events, have spiritual overtones. The quotes cited below reflect the spiritual awareness of Gullah/Geechee people (Interviews 2001-2002):

“We have to say God comes first. We can’t breathe without our God, and we gotta start with Him.”

“Gullah people respect God first; then, we’re able to respect others. We stop respectin’ if people give us a reason. Otherwise, we just keep respectin.’

“Goin’ to church is like goin’ to the ole’ dug well and drawin’ up a cold cup of water. When you drink it down on a hot August day...well, then you get
yourself a good feeling. That’s goin’ to church.”

“You gotta’ love everybody – that’s what the Lord says. Some people don’t want you to love ‘em. I don’t know what we’re gonna’ do with them folk.”

“This is all God’s property. I don’t know why outsiders think they own it. They sure ain’t gonna take it with ‘em when they meet the Lord.”

“Faith in our Almighty God gets the Gullah by on a daily basis”

Church membership is largely Baptist, or Methodist. However, the expression within these churches is not the same as in mainstream and mainland churches of the same denomination. A major departure from mainstream Christian philosophy is a duality of presence involving ‘soul’ and ‘spirit.’ The ‘soul’ leaves the body and returns to God at death, but the ‘spirit’ stays on earth – still involved in the daily affairs of its living descendants. As an example, funerals are elaborate and mourners decorate graves with prized possessions of the newly deceased.

Gullah/Geechee people believe their ‘ancestors’ maintain presence in daily affairs of the family. Ancestors visit with family members on various occasions, walk the streets and roads, guard and guide individuals, and advise or council people through spiritual means. The ‘dressing’ of graves, legends and accounts of visitations, and substantive Gullah folklore add significant dimension to this one specific concept – family members who have passed “are still with us now.” (Interviews 2001-2002)

...AND AS FAR AS LIMITING OUR THINGS WE DO TODAY AS NOT BEING OUT SIDE OF THE GULLAH IS ALSO FALSE. IWILL GIVE YOU THESE TWO EXAMPLES,

THE REASON YOU CAN NOT TEACH IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN OAKLAND IS MANY FOLDED. YOU MUST HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF EBONICS AND RECOGNIZE IT AS A LANGUAGE.WE AS A PEOPLE DON'T DO STANDARD' IN OUR SPEECH(AGAIN I WILL SAY HOW WHEN WHITNEY HUSTON SANG THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AND WHEN JIMMY HENDIRS PLAYED IT ON HIS GITAR IT WAS SEEN AS A NEW STYLE AGAIN THE NATIONAL ANTHEM IS 'STANDARD' WE SON'T DO STANDARD" ANYONE SEE REV. WRIGHT'S SPEECH ON C-SPAN WHEN HE TALKED ABOUT LOOK ON HEDANCE FLOOR AND WE ARE DANCING TO A DIFFERENT DRUMMER THENA WHITE PEOPLE???OUR BRIANS ARE MADE THIS WAY OR WE SEE IN ROUND AND WHITE PEOPLE SEE IN SQUARE...AFRICANC MAKE THEIR SHELTERS IN ROUND NOT SQUARE. I SHALLLET THAT GET LOOKED AT AND WILL TELLANOTHER LATER.(SMILE)

@A-L-L...

CICLE CELL ANEMIA AND WHY WE HAVE SUCH A HARD TIME BEING ABLE TO DRINK ANY MILK OTHER THEN OUR MOTHER'S BREAST MILE IS ACTUALLY A BLESING AND A WAY TO SOW OUR UNIQUENESS FOR SURVIVAL...

1.CCA HAS TO DO WITH WITH THE MUTATE OR BECOME EXRTINCT...TIS CONDITION WAS CREATED AS A MUTATION FOR US TO BE ABLE TO NOT BE WIPED OUR BY THE MALIRA MOSQUITO...

2. BREAST MIL IS NOT ONLY A WAY TO GIVE OUR BODIES A BETTER CHANCE TO GIVE A HELPING HAND TO OUR NATURAL BODY GUARDIANS AGAINST GERMS AND VIRUS BUT IT IS ALSO A NATURAL BIRTH CONTROL...WE HAVE A HARD TIME DRINKING COW'S MILK BECAUSE WE HAVE NOT BEEN OUT OF MOTHER AFRICA FOR US TO HAVE MUTATED AGAINST THESE TWO VERY THINGS, YET...

@DOC, YES AND I WILL REPEAT...

IF WE PUT AN AFRICAN AND A PERSON FROM GA. WHERE WE CAN ONLY HEAR HIS/ HER VOICE, WE WOULD BE VERY HARD PRESSED TO TELL WHICH IS WHICH AS THEY SPEAK. AND THIS IS WHERE GULLAH IS PLACED AS UNIQUE IN AMERICA, AND PRIDEFUL.(S-M-I-L-E)

@DAVID, PLEASE DON'T DELETE HARRY...BECAUSE HE CAN BE OUR REMINDER OF WHY WE HAVE BEEN TAUGHT TO HATE ON THE BLACK PANTHERS ALONG WIT WHY OUR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CLASSIFIED THEM AS PUBLIC ENEMY #1...TO DAY THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN CLASSIFIED AS 'TERRORIST' AND WHY TO THOSE LIKEME CALLING THEM REBELS AND NOT BLACK FREEDOM FIGHTERS IS OFFINSIVE TO THOSE LIKEME...

AND, WHY WE NEED THE HARRYS AND THE JENS AS REPRESENTING THOSE WHO HAVE AND WILL ALWAYS TRY TO HOLD US DOEN FOR TEH POSERS THAT BE IN THE NAME OF A 'W-H-I-T-E GOD TAHT GOT US IN THIS MESS IN TH EFIRST PLACE...OR THEY ARE HE OTHER SIDE OF OUR BIAHISTORY STORY. (SMILE)

@A-L-L...

NOW THAT THERE IS SOME INTEREST IN OUT AFRICAN-CENTERED VERSION OF OUR BIAHISTORY LETS LOOK A CHARSTON...

WE WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM KNOWING ABOUT THE WORD BECAUSE OF WHAT WE DEEM THE ROTING 20S AND THE SYMBOL OF THE ERA IS THE ANCE, THE CHARSTON...BUT THIS IS THE ERUPEAN-CENTERED HISTORY OF BOTH AMERICAN AND BIAHISTORY BECAUSE THE NAME CHARLSTON(AND BECAUSE IT IS THE CAPITOL OF, YOU GUESSED IT)...IT IS LEFT OUT HOW THE WORD CHARLSTON IS DERIVED FROM A DANCE THE CHATEL SLAVES USE TO DO ON SUNDAYS BECAUSE THE SLAVE MASTERS LOVED IT SO MUCH THAT WHEN THE SLAVES DID IT THEY WERE GIVEN SPECIAL TREATS...THIS IS WHAT I CALL US DENYING/ REJECTING TO CONTINUE THE PURPOSE OF OUR CONTINUING TO PASS ON THE 'LESS THEN THAT THE 'POSITIVES' BY US TO BUILD AMERICA INTO WHAT IT IS TODAY...
