It deals openly with miscegenation, inheritance, family secrets and hidden truths. The names of the characters in the novel are fictional but the story is true.
"Mr Billie, is it possible for you to answer some questions for me?"
"Don't know, maybe I can, and maybe I caint." He continued to whittle on a stick in his hand. "Girlie, what do you want to know?"
"Do you know what was in that package you gave me?"
"Nope, I don't." He did not look up nor did he stop whittling. Silence followed, but Billie Rachel knew for sure that she had more questions.
"What do you know about the history of this place?"
