How to Teach Yourself When you're in College (1906 hits)

One of the biggest fears for a college student is running into a class where you must teach yourself in order to succeed. It may be due to a professor’s teaching method, a language barrier or a lack of knowledge about the subject. There can be fear because you are studying hard but still don't seem to understand and the real problem is this is the only professor who teaches a certain topic. When you are in this type of situation you must take control. If it is not to late, you can drop the class or you can stay in the class and use some of the methods I am about to share. Here are some strategies that work:

1. Form a study group and assign chapters for your meetings

2. Meet with the instructor at least once a week

3. Get other books that you can review regarding the topic

4. Ask your professor for other resources to study

5. Search for videos on Khan Academy

6. Read each chapter in your book more than once and review your notes.

7. Read the same chapters before class and after class.

8. Find a graduate student or tutor who can help you.

9. Make a list of questions to ask your professor and your study group.

10. If the professor teaches another class, sit in on the lecture again.

Take charge of your success in this type of class by devoting more time. College is your time to shine. Sometimes a professor will teach you how to be resourceful because they are not giving you all of the tools. Take it as a challenge and keep a positive attitude even though it is a challenging course. You can make it.
