DAY 12
JUNE 2014
Sao Paulo, Brazil
Just hours before the opening of the World Cup football there were an opening of protests set at the first day's opening match. A group of demonstrators were gathered but broken up when police in Sao Paulo used teargas to spray the protestors away. At least one protestor was arrested and the group rallied to block the road leading to the stadium where the ceremony would take place. Police only moved in when about 50 protestors were blocking traffic and refused to leave. Recent protesting increased as thousands of Brazilians feel that the corrupt handling of money has not helped it citizens with jobs, and necessary ways to create jobs and boost their economic growth. People there feel the building of a stadium which hosts the World Cup games which totaled millions could have been used to assist a country and city in need of basic supply to earn a living or programs designed to aid the poverty of it's citizens. The protests are not uncommon as a group of more than 1 million were arrested across the country of Brazil for demand of public services and to illuminate corruption of government officials. Groups may be smaller this year, but the main message hasn't deterred them from protests of better living. The ceremony was carried out as police handled the protests quickly. The game went on between as Brazil vs. Croatia in the night's first game. News sources said that they expect more protests will show up during the games program.
