Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, honors Retired Brigadier General George A. Jones (7155 hits)


BALDWIN, N.Y. -- Baldwin, NY - August 14, 2014 - On August 9, 2014 the Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. completed its first series of Minority Women Business Enterprises Certification workshops at the Baldwin Library. The instructor for the workshop series was Charlene Jackson Thompson of the Baldwin-based firm Thompson Economic Development Services. A special award presentation was given to Retired Brigadier General George A. Jones for pioneering Minority Business Development on Long Island.

“The Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc’s ongoing series of workshops geared toward certification of Minority Women Business Enterprises will continue fill a significant gap to prepare more small business owners to bid on contracts on the local, county and state level in the region.” Phil Andrews, President – Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc.

The campaign to increase the number of Minority Women Business Enterprises was initially launched on January 10, 2014 in Hempstead, New York.

Charlene Thompson of Baldwin-based Thompson Economic Development Services stated in Newsday “We want our professional services as well as our trades to be aware of the contracting opportunities”. We want to give business owners the skills and capacity to successfully engage in government contracting on the local stage and national levels, so they can not only sustain themselves and the employees, but hire folks and create jobs.”

Sharon Davis, President and CEO of Freeport -based firm SJ Edwards, Inc. which provides employee benefits services stated in Newsday “The certification process is really cumbersome, but you have to in it to win it.” Sharon Davis received MWBE certification in 2013.

The Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. announced a campaign to increase the number of Certified Minority Business Owners in its member network throughout the counties it serves. - The Mission of the Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. is to advance and promote economic development for business, and to advance responsive government and quality education on the behalf of all small businesses, with emphasis on African Ancestry, while preserving the Long Island community. The chamber serves Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, and Kings Counties.
