A large number of people in the US state of Missouri have held a demonstration outside the office of Saint Louis County prosecutor, demanding the arrest of the white police officer who shot dead a black teenager earlier this month.

Ferguson, Missouri, has been the scene of violent clashes between police and protesters since the fatal police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown on August 9. He was shot multiple times and killed by police in the Saint Louis suburb of Ferguson.

US President Barack Obama has endorsed the use of the National Guard to suppress protests in Ferguson.

On Monday afternoon, Missouri National Guard soldiers sent by Governor Jay Nixon began to arrive in Ferguson, after earlier policing efforts failed to quell the protests.

�I spoke to Jay Nixon about this, expressed an interest in making sure that if in fact the National Guard is used, it is used in a limited and appropriate way. He described the support role that they�re going to be providing to local law enforcement. And I�ll be watching over the next several days, to assess whether, in fact, it�s helping rather than hindering progress in Ferguson,� Obama said.

On Friday, Ferguson police identified Darren Wilson as the officer who shot and killed the unarmed Africa-American teenager.

Wilson has been on paid administrative leave since the fatal shooting. He has not even been arrested or charged with the crime.

Witnesses say Brown was surrendering with his hands up as Wilson shot him.

On Thursday, Obama called for "peace and calm" and urged police to respect protesters. He also demanded an investigation into the killing.

FERGUSON, MO, AUGUST 21 (RIA Novosti) � US Attorney General Eric Holder said eyes around the �world are watching Ferguson right now� during his visit to the city aimed at easing tensions in the suburb that has been rocked by protests over the police killing of an unarmed African-American teenager.

�The eyes of the nation and the world are watching Ferguson right now,� Holder said at talks with public figures on Wednesday in Ferguson, which has endured race protests since 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed on August 9.

�The world is watching because the issues raised by the shooting of Michael Brown predate this incident. This is something that has a history to it and the history simmers beneath the surface in more communities than just Ferguson,� Holder stressed.

Demonstrators moved from the downtrodden suburb of Ferguson to St. Louis County prosecutor's office on Wednesday, where they rallied against tardiness in the charging of the police officer responsible for the shooting.

Ferguson, a mostly African-American suburb of St Louis with some 21,000 residents, has been shaken by protests and looting since Brown�s killing. Some 50 protestors were arrested on Tuesday during late-night demonstrations.

Missouri National Guard troops have been deployed to tackle the violence, which has grown fiercer as peaceful protestors were joined by looters from California and New York. Law enforcers have been criticized for using tear gas, rubber bullets and other heavy-handed measures.
