Why Mrs.María de la Soledad Teresa O'Brien STARTED BIA? (2037 hits)

11 ways race isn’t real

1) Americans embraced the idea of race to make slavery feel okay

2) The way we legally define different races in America can change on a whim

3) Once upon a time, some people from Europe were "not quite white"

4) The government still hasn't figured out a good way to get people to pick a race

5) The race of people of Middle Eastern and North African descent is in limbo

6) Siblings with the same parents can claim different races

7) You're free to change your race in your life, as many times as you want

8) You can't tell by looking at someone what box they check or how they identify

9) Seriously, there's not even a consensus on Obama

10) DNA tests can't measure it

The social identity of individuals is linked to their racial and cultural identities which give them a sense of purpose in life. It is common knowledge that Italians, Greeks, Russians, Germans, French, Swedes, Finns, Norwegians, Spaniards, to name a few, have identifiable cultures that are linked to their social and racial identity and that this identity is embraced, welcomed, and accepted throughout the Western world. These cultural groups are known for their goods and services, foods, modes of production, religions, and regions.

However, a radically different story emerges about people of color, specifically African Americans. When reflection is given to individuals of African extraction, what thought comes to mind?

Naturally, racialized societies throughout the world associate negative images to persons, groups, or things they do not understand or to those things they perceive as different (See Images of the outsider in American law and culture: Can Free Expression Remedy Systemic Social Ills, Chapter 21, pp. 225-235.)

These negative images usually come from a white racial frame that is sustained and maintained by systemic racism.

African Americans have been the subject of racialized and discursive discourse that has socially constructed them as criminals and amoral human beings, which challenges their humanity and their right to a legitimate social and racial identity. Such racialized discourse has its roots in slavery, was reproduced during the Jim Crow era, and is maintained today through systemic racism to keep them from having a healthy identity, one that the world can appreciate and respect.

When CNN’s Black in America aired during the month of July 2008, Fox News invited both black and white contributors to share their perceptions of the CNN documentary. These contributing sycophants used offensive and racially-charged statements to demean African Americans

When racist media....(LIKE BIA) use black intellectual mercenaries to pander to white audiences to denounce a cultural practice or particular behavior in African Americans in general, they are, in essence, identifying African Americans as subjects worthy to be oppressed, absolving a racialized society of all blame for their oppressed condition and the reason such behavior has become a normalized practice.

Maria de la Soledad Teresa O’Brien says

“What values of life do we live and not just state,” she asked. “And what values as a nation do we have? It’s both terrifying and freeing to realize the future is in our hands.”

O’Brien quoted President John F. Kennedy’s reference that “the hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in a period of moral crisis maintain their neutrality.”

“People willing to be a lone voice even when it’s not OK is important,” she said.

“......... What defines you as a human being is more important.”

Who is black in America?

Soledad O'Brien:

Editor's Note: In today’s United States, is being black determined by the color of your skin, by your family, by what
society says, or something else?

By Yaba Blay and Soledad O'Brien, CNN

(CNN) - Yaba Blay, Ph.D. created the (1)ne Drop Project, a multiplatform endeavor that hopes to challenge
perceptions of black identity.

Blay, a consulting producer for "Who Is Black in America?"

Yaba Blay: I remember when "Black in America" first came out, and a lot of people being like “Who is she and why
is SHE doing this?”

O'Brien: I think it’s a valid question. I think every question is valid. I just don’t think there should be a rule like “Oooh that is the question that shall not be asked.” I’m happy to answer any question. And I think also there is sometimes a hostility in that question. Especially around "Black in America

Blay: Have you had that experience of people asking you, “What are you?”

O'Brien: Oh my God yes! All the time...... I used to take great offense – like immediately sort of get annoyed,
partly because I don’t think that came from a very good place.
I think I read it as sort of questioning my value and reasons.........I’m a journalist, people are really just trying to understand.........my job as a journalist is to educate people about stories in a way and some of these stories I’m part of that story.

Blay: So why do you think the questions are coming?
Why are there questions about why Soledad is doing "Black in America?"

O'Brien: Some of it is physical presentation. I think that some of it was that I’d been anchoring shows that weren’t dealing specifically with African-Americans so it was kind of like "What are your politics? What’s your perspective? Who are you?" I think sometimes it’s as straightforward as that.
At screenings for "Black in America" I’ve heard people say, “Well you know I never thought you were black.......What was it that made you think I was black?” And then someone else would say, “Yeah, but she’s married to a white man.” And I’m like "OK, so does that make me less black and how in your mind does that math work?

That there’s a certain number and if you get below that number because you get points for who you marry and you lose points for where you live and how you speak?"

Blay: So what makes a person black?

O'Brien: I certainly don’t think it’s skin color.

And I certainly don’t think it’s how well you speak the language.

And I’m not sure I can answer that question thoroughly because my consciousness about race was really implanted in me by my parents.

My mother would say, “Do not let anybody tell you you’re not black. Do not let anybody tell you you’re not Latina.”

But now I understand.......We were raised that way in a place that was often not particularly hospitable and sometimes out and out hostile to people of color.

I guess my parents taught me very early that how other people perceive me really was not my problem or my responsibility.

It was much more based on how I perceived me.

More About Us...

"Black In America" is more than just a phrase to describe African Americans in the United States. It's a movement that creates awareness and encourages dialogue about relevant issues. The phrase was originally coined by CNN when they produced several documentary-style "Black In America" special reports. The reports brought national attention to issues concerning Black families, men, and women. Since then, several groups and organizations have launched various initiatives to support the cause.

BIA is an online community for African American men, women, and families, and want to shatter negative stereotypes and misconceptions.
This platform stimulates positive ideas, dialogue and solutions. This site is not affiliated with CNN, but does compliment their "Black In America" special reports.

In this confused American Period, when many Americans have divided into tribes, clans and anti Democratic groups

.....We Pray our dearest Mrs. María de la Soledad Teresa O'Brien is raising with Love her family and enjoying away from the silly News of the day

"HER" FOUNDATION today through Starfish Media Group is STILL awarding Scholarships to Young Women and Men throughout the American Family

---- IN "HER" WORDS

"......My ethnic roots are relevant when you look at the broader picture of who brings us the news. Who you are matters oh so very much when,

It's critical in covering a community well to report both the good and the bad.
I learned so much about reporting on race and some unexpected lessons .....But by the time the project ended....

I felt like I had started an important conversation about the struggles and the successes of the African-American community.

It's hard ....... to explain a community that is diverse and ever-changing, a community with which sometimes I don't have a great deal in common.

I see the job I have now as my opportunity to get good reporting...., as a chance to bring people together, and to tell a fair and accurate story ..........,

not just rehash stereotypes for the sake of drama. ...."

Soledad O'Brien

@soledadobrien

...........You are soooo reluctant to use the word ‘racist’. The ‘politics of white anxiety’ is literally racism.

There’s a lot of …. journalists who refuse to call out Donald Trump as a racist.

………..One seasoned newsperson, Soledad O’Brien, ain’t having it!

“I often on Twitter talk to journalists because I feel like they dropped the ball at times.

I think a lot of journalists are doing great work a lot and I think some are doing poor work.”

So she uses her social media account to call a spade a spade, or rather, call a racist a racist.

………..“A year ago, when I was working at CNN, we had to stop someone from using video of people climbing over a wall when they were talking about immigrants,

” she said. “I’m like, ‘You don’t even know who these people are. You know you can’t just wallpaper that! Like what are you doing?’

She continued: “That was a news organization! It’s a constant re-educating of people...….. It’s got roots in manipulating people. These things aren’t accidental.
