I Am Not Your Negro (337 hits)

From The Ramparts
Junious Ricardo Stanton
I Am Not Your Negro

My wife and I went to see Raoul Peck's documentary I Am Not Your Negro. It was based upon James Baldwin's writings and life experiences. It uses archival footage of Baldwin, pictures and footage of American history and Samuel L. Jackson's voice reading and sharing some of Baldwin's thoughts and writings to tell his story. It uses music, the Blues, and popular recordings to infuse the images with emotion and Baldwin's perspective on racial politics in America. It is a powerful film. It helps the viewer realize history and "the past" are not distant, unrelated, abstract disconnected entities, but an integral, integrated and omnipresent part of our now. It demonstrates we cannot escape our past and America certainly cannot nor will never change unless and until we face our demons and make an honest effort to repent and be better.
The film is in limited distribution. In fact it is in only two theaters in the whole Philadelphia, tri-state area. It is not the kind of film the masses of Americans Black or white will go see. I can readily see why. The film, like James Baldwin is unnerving, it shatters our illusions and delusions about race in America. It is based on an uncompleted book Baldwin was writing prior to his death.
James Baldwin always made me uncomfortable, yet he influenced me greatly. He was uncompromising in his assessment of the American reality. He took no prisoners and didn't give white America any wiggle room to escape their sins, their duplicity, lies and hypocrisy. His piercing eyes, his candor and vocabulary made him a champion for Negroes as we were called in the 1960's when I became familiar with his work.
The film includes interviews of him on the **** Cavett television program in the 1960's, lectures at Cambridge and archival footage of American history, the history most Americans want to forget. I Am Not Your Negro weaves many threads using Baldwin's words, pictures, Hollywood film clips and current events to tell Baldwin's story as interpreted by Raoul Peck, which makes the film extraordinarily powerful. Under Peck's direction the film examines the impact of three men on Baldwin's life, their martyrdom and his relationship with them: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. Baldwin knew all three and each had a profound impact on his life because as a writer he was intimately involved in the struggle against oppression. In the film Baldwin who was living in Paris as an expatriate determined to return to America and become engaged in the struggle because as he said, he could no longer be a spectator from afar.
But aside from Baldwin's personal thoughts, insights and opinions, the film also reveals the connectivity between the past, slavery, American apartheid euphemistically called "Jim Crow" and today. Peck fuses pictures of Ferguson Missouri, Trayvon Martin and a host of other Blacks killed by police while using Baldwin's words to juxtapose his personal defiance and optimism amidst the carnage and oppression of his day. Near the end of the film Baldwin questions the very need to create *****s and he says, "I am not a *****, I'm a man".
But the sad reality is, the theme of the film is apropos today, which is scary. During the film the audience sat in rapt attention. There was no talking, no nervous laughter just focused concentration. Every once in a while you could here someone murmur, "that's right", or "uh, uh uh". When exiting the theater I observed hushed tones and expressions on people's faces demonstrating they were in deep thought. This is what art is supposed to do.

YES.... TEACH Brother Junious Ricardo Stanton. Thank You for sharing this information about "Am Not Your Negro." James Baldwin's writings and life experiences are deep and a good read so, I can only imagine what a impact that Raoul Peck's documentary can have.

I am going to see where this documentary is playing in Chicago, Thanks Brother Junious Ricardo Stanton.

Mr. Stanton,

When did Mr. James Baldwin become a free man that he can say with truthfulness that, “I’m Not Your Negro”?

All Black Americans descendent of plantation slaves are still White America’s Negroes until my prophecy of Black Americans securely settled in the territory that will become our country completely happens!

Mr. Stanton you are a very stupid and ignorant man since you like sensationalism.

Hay HARRY, Did you read the information at the beginning of this blog?

Mr. Ron,

I don’t take kindly to your interrogation. This is the second time I am having to say the same thing to you.

I posted my comment. I want to know when Mr. James Baldwin stopped being White America’s Negro since we are not firmly settled in the territory that will become our country as my prophecy says!

If you have a comment to make whether you agree or disagree with my comment you are free to do so, but interrogating me will not work you stupid ass- hole!

If you had commented like a normal intelligent person would have it would not be a need for me to call you stupid and ass holes, but when you start out interrogating me to wit; “Harry did you read the information at the beginning of this blog” is doing the same thing over and over because you have done it before and you have gotten the same results from me which is I don’t take kindly to being interrogated by your dumb ass.

Now, had you went on and posted your comment we could have been one step further into the discussion.
Since you want to bull- **** and hold up the discussion by trying to derail Mr. Stanton’s blog and hijack this blog by interrogating me when I’m not really your customer since this is not your blog to interrogate me!

I would have appreciated had you or Mr. Stanton answered my question/concern of when did Mr. James Baldwin stopped being White America’s Negro, but instead you chose to interrogate me and since I do not take kindly to your interrogation this will be my last comment to you, Mr. Ron.

As usual no progress is ever accomplished when you and I come together and so this is how it has been ever since I knew you for the past eight years. You are extremely stupid!

HARRY,

If you were to take your head, out of you’re a s s for just one moment, you would see a brand new world and not based on your limited BULL💩 that you bring to every topic and you would never put your head back in that dismal, dull, gloomy, depressing and miserable place ever again.

If you would have read the commentary, you would have seen for yourself, that “I Am Not Your Negro” is the title of a documentary based on the life of James Baldwin’s writings and life experiences. It uses archival footage of Baldwin, pictures and footage of American history and Samuel L. Jackson's voice reading and sharing some of Baldwin's thoughts and writings to tell his story. Also you would have known that this question of yours was irrational, silly, rash, unwise, thoughtless, insensitive and just plain foolish.

HARRY, our Brothers and Sisters know what you are and feel that it is a waste of time talking to you but I guess that I am a fool for holding out, to take that precious time out to tell you about yourself and I for one don’t give a damn about what you don’t like.

If you feel that asking you one simple question as to reading of this subject is and I quote “INTERROGATION,” then you have no meaning of the word and you don’t read with understanding.

Now Brother HARRY, go back and reread this article and maybe this experience of Brother Junious Ricardo Stanton may inspire you to see the documentary for yourself, if you care to know more about the life experiences of James Baldwin.

From reading these words of Brother Junious Ricardo Stanton, my wife and I have made plans to go see this documentary.

HARRY, talk to you soon, bye, BYE…

Mr. Ron,

This is the deal!
Mr. Ron I believe that Mr. James Baldwin is still White America’s Negro since Mr. Baldwin is not a free man in a country of his own.
Mr. Ron until you show me that Mr. Baldwin is a free man in a country of his own this discussion between you and I is over!

Brother HARRY,

Brother James Baldwin is more freer than you and I. Brother James Baldwin don't have to worry about his freedom because Brother James Baldwin is dead. During his life time of just 63 years, he was able to influence the thinking of countless of millions of Black Americans through his words and some 30 years after his death Brother James Baldwin is still inspiring both young and old Black Americans to this very day.

Now Brother Harry, if that evidence of FACTS don't convince you that he was free enough through his words to be heard, not only in this country but the world and still rings out to touch us, the Black American some 30 years after his death, then you have no concept of what being FREE in your own country to express yourself is and you need to leave this conversation ASAP because this topic is way over your head.
