Rescheduled MLK Citywide Community Celebration & Awards by ASU & Troy! This Wed. at 6 pm (4654 hits)

WHEN: This Wednesday (Jan. 31), at 6 p.m.
WHERE: The Davis Theater, 251 Montgomery St., in downtown Montgomery.

Alabama State University's College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Friends of the ASU Theatre are partnering with Troy University to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - the earlier event that was postponed due to the winter storm is now rescheduled for this Wednesday (Jan. 31), at 6 p.m.

The public is again invited to join Alabama State University and Troy University for the fourth annual citywide MLK Community Celebration to honor the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the historic Davis Theatre, located at 251 Montgomery St., in downtown Montgomery. Tickets purchased earlier for the previous event on Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. will be honored and new tickets may be purchased by calling 334-229-6755.

The event, “A Message for the Future from Keepers of the Dream,” reflects the desire of Dr. King and his followers for America to move forward as it continues to bond as a community.

The citywide community celebration is directed by Dr.Tommie H. Stewart, dean of ASU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (and an acclaimed Hollywood actress), and features spirituals and contemporary music by an interfaith, citywide choir; dramatic presentations and dances by local actors, and recognition awards to local residents who have kept Dr. King's 'dream' alive.

“This event will demonstrate a concerted effort from our culturally diverse community to exhibit peace, unity and love -- embracing Dr. King’s concept of the Beloved Community,” said Dean Stewart.

SPECIAL AWARDS PRESENTATION
A number of individuals from the Montgomery area will receive the Beloved Community Award, which commends residents for their exemplary work, leadership and commitment in building their own version of Dr. King's “Beloved Community.”

The event is sponsored by Alabama State University's College of Visual and Performing Arts, Friends of the ASU Theatre and Troy University.
