Illegal entry is a misdemeanor and should not be an excuse to snatch children from their families. In many cases the immigrants are seeking asylum at the border in towns on the Mexican side of the border that is the most dangerous places on EARTH and was told to come back in a week or two because the immigration office is closed.
If the immigration office is closed due to man power, then get the people to those offices and open them up.

It has nothing to do with anything but legal versus illegal entry Ron. I'm waiting to hear from my sister on the dates of my ancestors' LEGAL entry but I do see that Ellis Island didn't open until 1892 and it was likely they came in before then. I also noticed that not all immigrants that came to Ellis Island were granted entry.
From 1892 to 1924, Ellis Island was America's largest and most active immigration station, where over 12 million immigrants were processed. On average, the inspection process took approximately 3-7 hours. For the vast majority of immigrants, Ellis Island truly was an "Island of Hope" - the first stop on their way to new opportunities and experiences in America. For the rest, it became the "Island of Tears" - a place where families were separated and individuals were denied entry into the United States.

Generally, those immigrants who were approved spent from two to five hours at Ellis Island. Arrivals were asked 29 questions including name, occupation, and the amount of money carried. It was important to the American government the new arrivals could support themselves and have money to get started. The average the government wanted the immigrants to have was between 18 and 25 dollars ($600 in 2015 adjusted for inflation). Those with visible health problems or diseases were sent home or held in the island's hospital facilities for long periods of time. More than 3,000 would-be immigrants died on Ellis Island while being held in the hospital facilities. Some unskilled workers were rejected because they were considered "likely to become a public charge." About 2% were denied admission to the U.S. and sent back to their countries of origin for reasons such as having a chronic contagious disease, criminal background, or insanity.[43] Ellis Island was sometimes known as "The Island of Tears" or "Heartbreak Island"[44] because of those 2% who were not admitted after the long transatlantic voyage.

The Immigration Act of 1924, or Johnson–Reed Act, including the National Origins Act, and Asian Exclusion Act (Pub.L. 68–139, 43 Stat. 153, enacted May 26, 1924), was a United States federal law that set quotas on the number of immigrants from certain countries while providing funding and an enforcement mechanism to carry out the longstanding (but hitherto unenforced) ban on other non-white immigrants. Contrary to popular belief, Latin Americans were not prohibited or limited from immigrating under the law. In most states and under federal law, persons of mixed white and Native American ancestry were considered white; this principle was interpreted under the Act to allow Latin Americans to immigrate as "white persons." Moreover, unlike Eastern and Southern Europe, no nationality-based quotas were placed on Latin American immigrants. Thus, the law allowed unlimited Latin American immigration, just as it allowed unlimited northwestern European immigration. Ironically, the 1965 immigration law that replaced the 1924 Act, though abolishing racial preferences and national quotas, would effectively place greater restriction on Latin American immigration.
According to the U.S. Department of State Office of the Historian the purpose of the act was "to preserve the ideal of American homogeneity".[5] But though the Act aimed at preserving American racial homogeneity, it set no limits on immigration from other countries of the Americas, including Latin America.[6] Congressional opposition was minimal. According to Columbia University historian Mae Ngai, the 1924 Act put an end to a period where the United States essentially had open borders.[7]
A key element of the Act was its provisions for enforcement. The longstanding ban on nonwhite immigration to the US had rarely been enforced in practice. The Act provided funding and legal instructions to courts of deportation for non-white immigrants, and Eastern and Southern European immigrants who exceeded their national quotas. Deportations of North African, Arabian, and East Indian immigrants were sometimes challenged in court with claims that these persons were "white." Initially these immigrants were deported, but by the post-World War II era, with xenophobia on the decline, all of these groups were classified as white under American law.

TPS Beneficiaries from El Salvador, Honduras, and Haiti Have Integrated into U.S. Society
Many TPS holders from El Salvador, Honduras, and Haiti came to the United States at a young age and have spent a significant portion of their life here. Salvadoran and Honduran TPS holders have, on average, spent at least a third of their lives on TPS. And, approximately 30 percent of Haitian TPS beneficiaries were 15 years old or younger when they arrived in the United States. This long-term settlement has allowed them to become active and contributing members of their communities and the nation as a whole.
The majority of Salvadorans and Hondurans with TPS have lived in the United States for at least 20 years (51 and 63 percent, respectively), while 16 percent of Haitian TPS holders have resided in the country for at least two decades. During this time, they have been regularly vetted by the government, submitting themselves to background checks every time their TPS has been renewed. Hondurans, for example, have passed security checks 13 times while having TPS.
Many TPS beneficiaries from El Salvador, Honduras, and Haiti have families in the United States. These families include approximately 273,000 native-born U.S.-citizen children. Almost two-thirds (61 percent) of Salvadoran and Honduran TPS holders with children reported in a 2016 survey that they had at least one U.S.-born child.
Salvadoran, Honduran, and Haitian TPS beneficiaries live in nearly 206,000 households, about 30 percent of which have mortgages. Almost a third (32 percent) of Salvadoran and Honduran TPS holders surveyed in 2016 owned their own home.
TPS holders from El Salvador, Honduras, and Haiti live throughout the United States. Together, six states—California, Florida, Texas, New York, Virginia, and Maryland—are home to about 70 percent of these TPS recipients.
The vast majority (87 percent) of TPS holders from El Salvador, Honduras, and Haiti speak at least some English, and slightly over one-half speak English well, very well, or only English.

My sister just wrote me Ron, on one of my ancestors: "[redacted], Grandma's grandfather. Emigrated from Sweden to US in 1886. I have copies of his intent to become a citizen dated 1887(or 1889) and his naturalization record dated 1991 (I don't know what the current requirements are but at that time they needed to live in US for 5 years before becoming a citizen.)"

Well Ron, my great great grandfather left Germany on a sailboat in 1861, headed for New Orleans, because he hated militarism and wanted to avoid the draft. On the way they learned that New Orleans was under blockade and changed course for New York, and because of contrary winds nearly had a collision with icebergs. When they arrived in New York 100 of the men were immediately drafted for our Civil War.
