HOW KING CHARLES III ARRIVES AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE AND ADDRESSES THE UNITED KINGDOM & WORLD REALMS! (1655 hits)

HOT OFF THE PRESS FROM BBC NEWS!

At the moment the Queen died, the throne passed immediately and without ceremony to the heir, Charles, the former Prince of Wales.

But there are a number of practical - and traditional - steps which he must go through to be crowned King.

What will he be called?

He will be known as King Charles III.

That was the first decision of the new king's reign. He could have chosen from any of his four names - Charles Philip Arthur George.

He is not the only one who faces a change of title. Prince William and his wife Catherine are now titled Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge, and the king has conferred on them the title of Prince and Princess of Wales.

There is also a new title for Charles' wife, Camilla, who becomes the Queen Consort - consort is the term used for the spouse of the monarch.

Formal ceremonies

Charles will be officially proclaimed King on Saturday. This will happen at St James's Palace in London, in front of a ceremonial body known as the Accession Council.

This is made up of members of the Privy Council - a group of senior MPs, past and present, and peers - as well as some senior civil servants, Commonwealth high commissioners, and the Lord Mayor of London.

More than 700 people are entitled in theory to attend, but given the short notice, the actual number is likely to be far fewer. At the last Accession Council in 1952, about 200 attended.

At the meeting, the death of Queen Elizabeth will be announced by the Lord President of the Privy Council (currently Penny Mordaunt MP), and a proclamation will be read aloud.

The wording of the proclamation can change, but it has traditionally been a series of prayers and pledges, commending the previous monarch and pledging support for the new one.

This proclamation is then signed by a number of senior figures including the prime minister, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Lord Chancellor.

As with all these ceremonies, there will be attention paid to what might have been altered, added or updated, as a sign of a new era.

The King's first declaration

The king will then attend a second meeting of the Accession Council, along with the Privy Council. This is not a "swearing in" at the start of a British monarch's reign, in the style of some other heads of state, such as the President of the US. Instead there is a declaration made by the new King and - in line with a tradition dating from the early 18th Century - he will make an oath to preserve the Church of Scotland.

After a fanfare of trumpeters, a public proclamation will be made declaring Charles as the new King. This will be made from a balcony above Friary Court in St James's Palace, by an official known as the Garter King of Arms.

He will call: "God save the King", and for the first time since 1952, the national anthem will be played with the words "God Save the King".

Gun salutes will be fired in Hyde Park, the Tower of London and from naval ships, and the proclamation announcing Charles as the King will be read in in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

The coronation

The symbolic high point of the accession will be the coronation, when Charles is formally crowned. Because of the preparation needed, the coronation is not likely to happen very soon after Charles's accession - Queen Elizabeth succeeded to the throne in February 1952, but was not crowned until June 1953.

For the past 900 years the coronation has been held in Westminster Abbey - William the Conqueror was the first monarch to be crowned there, and Charles will be the 40th.

It is an Anglican religious service, carried out by the Archbishop of Canterbury. At the climax of the ceremony, he will place St Edward's Crown on Charles's head - a solid gold crown, dating from 1661.

This is the centrepiece of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London, and is only worn by the monarch at the moment of coronation itself (not least because it weighs a hefty 2.23kg - almost 5lbs).

Unlike royal weddings, the coronation is a state occasion - the government pays for it, and ultimately decides the guest list.

There will be music, readings and the ritual of anointing the new monarch, using oils of orange, roses, cinnamon, musk and ambergris.

The new King will take the coronation oath in front of the watching world. During this elaborate ceremony he will receive the orb and sceptre as symbols of his new role and the Archbishop of Canterbury will place the solid gold crown on his head.

Head of the Commonwealth
Charles has become head of the Commonwealth, an association of 56 independent countries and 2.4 billion people. For 14 of these countries, as well as the UK, the King is head of state.

These countries, known as the Commonwealth realms, are: Australia, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, St Christopher and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu.

King Charles III arrives at Buckingham Palace As Monarch For the First Time!

LONDON — King Charles III traveled from Balmoral Castle in Scotland to Buckingham Palace in London on Friday, marking his first arrival as king to the administrative center of the monarchy. He greeted cheering crowds gathered outside the palace as some sang "God save the King."

On his first full day of duties, he will address the nation as it mourns the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. He will also meet with the United Kingdom's prime minister, Liz Truss, who is new to the job after being appointed earlier this week.

As Britain begins a 10-day mourning period, the country and the world are paying tribute to the queen.

Follow here for live coverage.

Here is what is expected to happen today:
Parts of daily life in the U.K. hit a pause in tribute to the queen: Sporting matches were postponed, worker strikes were canceled and the Bank of England delayed a key meeting on interest rates.
King Charles III arrived in London from Balmoral, and his inaugural address to the nation will be broadcast at 6 p.m. (1 p.m. ET).

Bells tolled around Britain and 96 gun salutes took place at 1 p.m. in London — one for each year of the queen’s long life.

A public remembrance service will be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, with Truss and senior government ministers expected to attend.

Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Suss*x, will become Prince and Princess of Wales, King Charles said in his innaugural address to the nation.

“Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty,” the new monarch said.

“With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the center ground where vital help can be given,” he added.

He said he also wanted to “express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”

Britain’s new monarch paid tribute to his mother in his inaugural address to the nation as King, describing her as “an inspiration and example to me and to all my family,” and thanking her “for her love, affection, guidance, understanding and example.”

“Queen Elizabeth was a life well lived, a promise with destiny kept, and she is mourned most deeply in her passing. That promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today," King Charles III said.

“Her dedication and devotion as Sovereign never wavered, through times of change and progress, through times of joy and celebration, and through times of sadness and loss,” he said, adding that “the affection, admiration and respect she inspired became the hallmark of her reign.”

Thanking the queen for her “love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years," he signed off by saying: “May ‘flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest.’”

What King Charles III Means for Scotland’s Future in the U.K.

he coffin of Queen Elizabeth II will soon arrive in Edinburgh, where she will be taken to Holyrood Palace—her official residence in the Scottish capital—and later St. Giles Cathedral on the city’s cobbled Royal Mile, replete with tourist shops festooned in the nation’s iconic checked tartan cloth.

Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, attends the Braemar Highland Gathering at The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park on Sept. 3, 2022 in Braemar, Scotland. Charles became King Charles III on Sept. 8 following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

In truth, however, the widespread adoption of tartan—the distinctive woolen pattern most commonly associated with Scottish kilts—is owed to a royal public relations stunt designed to win local approval for the British crown. Traditionally, tartan had been the sole custom of arcane highland tribes but shunned by the lowland “elites.”

But to heal rifts across the border, in 1822 the famed novelist Sir Walter Scott stage-managed a vast pageant in Edinburgh, during which new King George IV wore a tartan kilt while meeting similarly attired local chieftains. It was a roaring success and the popularity of the monarchy and tartan—today one of most potent and vivid symbols of Scottish identity—soared in tandem.

It’s a sign of how deftly the royal family has handled its relations with Scotland in recent centuries—a relationship that is entering uncharted waters following King Charles III’s formal accession to the throne on Friday.

In a 2020 poll, 70% of Scots aged 16 to 34 supported breaking away from the United Kingdom. And a separate poll by the think tank British Future in May found that more than a third of Scots overall said the end of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign would be the right time to abolish the monarchy and become a republic, higher than the quarter of Brits overall who said the same.

When will King Charles III Be Coronated? Everything We Know So Far

The moment Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday at Balmoral Castle, King Charles III became the first king of the United Kingdom in over 70 years. However, his coronation ceremony, a solemn religious event that has remained the same for nearly a thousand years, may not occur for months.

After the death of the queen's father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952, Elizabeth's coronation took place over a year later in June 1953. The U.K. will undergo a period of mourning for the next few months until King Charles is crowned at Westminster Abbey; however, he may immediately begin his reign as king after over 50 years of service as the Prince of Wales.

"For the last 900 years, the ceremony has taken place at Westminster Abbey, London," according to the Royal Family website. "The service is conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, whose task this has almost always been since the Norman Conquest in 1066."

Present at the ceremony will be members of the House of Parliament, Church, and State, as well as representatives from other countries. The coronation is unlike any other royal event and will be paid for by the British government, which is also in charge of creating the guest list, according to The BBC.
