This reminds of a moment in my childhood. Walking home with my mom and brother in our north side Chicago neighborhood, my 12 year old brother decided he'd dart down an l shaped alley to cut us off around the corner just playing around. I had never seen my mother so livid. She told my brother "Don't you EVER run down any alley unless someone is trying to kill you. You are a black male. A black male running who is not in a race is guilty and the police will eat you alive." At the time, I thought this was the stupidest thing I ever heard, but now I understand her message.

Wow we have not come that far in our history to hear this kind of talk.

I just told my 17 year old not to be indignant with the police. I didn't say 'cower' but I understand what people are talking about. I just moved to the suburbs and most of my white neighbors are nice, friendlier than black neighbors in Detroit. I am however concerned about my sons becoming statistics. There are too many reports of black males being assumed guilty or being apprehended for questioning and getting killed before even making it to the police station and never actually found guilty. I read an article just the other day of a 19 yr old being tasered 14 times in under an hour and dying from electric shock to his heart. I'd rather my son cower and live than jump bad with a racist cop.
